Entrevista Anders Schultz

Unleashed, banda clásica del death metal sueco, ha sido una fuerza imparable desde su primer entrega “Where No Life Dwells” en 1991. Es una de las pocas bandas del género, reconocible casi al instante por su marca registrada de riffs, siempre poderosos y con engache.

“As Yggdrasil Trembles”, el nuevo ataque de estos pioneros acaba de salir bajo el sello Nuclear Blast, y es nada menos que el décimo disco de estudio de estos suecos, quienes fueron prácticamente los primeros en incorporar la mitología nórdica al death metal, años antes de que existiera lo que hoy conocemos como Viking metal. Anders Schultz, baterista de la banda desde sus inicios en 1989, se tomó el tiempo de contestar las preguntas que www.metalicos.com le envió, y aquí están sus respuestas. Amantes del death metal escandinavo, ¡¡¡Es hora de sacar las hachas!!!

1-METALICOS-!Saludos! Soy Mauricio de www.metalicos.com desde Costa Rica, ¡gracias por la oportunidad de hacer esta entrevista! ¿Cómo están estos días ahora que su nuevo disco acaba de salir?

Anders/ !Hey Mauricio, estamos todos muy bien! Es bueno tener el álbum afuera y con una respuesta tan positiva, y es bueno también poder empezar a salir y tocar shows para promoverlo.

2-METALICOS-¿Cómo se sienten respecto a estar todavía en una posición privilegiada entre críticos y fans después de dos décadas? ¿Soñaron alguna vez que tendrían una carrera tan larga?

Anders/ ¡Se siente súper bien desde luego! Pero no, no creo que ninguno de nosotros pudo imaginar dónde esto nos llevaría. Por supuesto cuando eres joven apenas si creer que vas a sobrevivir tanto haha…

3-METALICOS-Muchas bandas sacan un par de discos donde agotan la mayoría de sus mejores riffs. Pero en su álbum previo el poderoso “Hammer Battalion”, los riffs de calidad eran incontables. ¿Cómo se las arreglan para mantener un nivel creativo tan elevado después de tantos años?

Anders/ La verdad no lo sé. Nosotros simplemente componemos lo que componemos y parece funcionar. Pasamos mucho tiempo con las canciones. Comenzamos a escribir material tan pronto como sacamos un disco.

4-METALICOS-Hablemos un poco sobre su álbum “As Yggdrasil Trembles”. ¿Puedes describir lo que escucharemos?

Anders/ Será una continuación natural de Hammer Battalion, y de lo que es Unleashed en general. Nosotros simplemente tratamos de desarrollarnos dentro de nuestro estilo más que cambiarlo.

5-METALICOS-¿Trabajaron en algún concepto específico o idea cuando compusieron el disco nuevo, en lo lírico y musical?

Anders/ Hay algo de concepto en las letras, algo que será continuado en el disco próximo. En lo que respecta a la música, solamente –como te decía- queremos evolucionar lo que es Unleashed.

6-METALICOS-¿Cómo estuvo el proceso de grabación? Siendo una banda experimentada no parece que tengan muchas dificultades en el estudio, pero enfrentaron algún tipo de obstáculo o desafío con el fin de completar el trabajo?

Anders/ No, todo el proceso estuvo bastante tranquilo. Hemos econtrado una forma de trabajar con la que nos sentimos muy comfortables y creo que eso se muestra en el producto final. Eso definitivamente lo sentimos cuando estamos trabajando y es algo bastante bueno.

7-METALICOS-¿Tienen planes para salir de tour por América Latina promoviendo “As Yggdrasil Trembles”?

Anders/ No hay todavía planes de tour en concreto, pero sí esperamos estar fuera un buen rato y por supuesto ir por allá tan pronto como podamos.

8-METALICOS-Después de trabajar con SPV los últimos años, decidieron cambiar a Nuclear Blast. ¿Cómo se sienten con el cambio, cuáles son sus expectativas?

Anders/ Sentimos que es definitivamente un paso en la dirección correcta, y creemos que ambos nos beneficiaremos en gran medida con esta colaboración.

9-METALICOS-¿Van a grabar video para alguna de las canciones del disco nuevo?

Anders/ No estamos seguros todavía. Tal vez.

10-METALICOS-¿Compusieron muchas canciones en esta ocasión? ¿Les resultó difícil escoger los 12 himnos que finalmente entraron en el álbum?

Anders/ Ya que trabajamos en las canciones por un tiempo tan largo y como es siempre un proceso que avanza, muchas canciones quedan recortadas a lo largo del camino. Pero al final las que quedan son las que acaban entrando al disco.

11-METALICOS-Si miras en retrospectiva, ¿cuáles son los logros de la banda de los que te sientes más orgulloso?

Anders/ Es difícil de decir. Sólo estar aquí todavía haciendo esto y teniendo la oportunidad de sacar discos y tocar shows, es el logro más grande de todos en realidad.

12-METALICOS-Las experimentaciones radicales nunca fueron parte de su evolución musical a través de los años pero, alguna vez recibieron presión o sugerencias del sello o los medios para cambiar su estilo y poder alcanzar una audiendia mayor?

Anders/ No, nunca fuimos presionados para hacer nada por el estilo. Creo que incluso las disqueras sabían que eso sería un muy mal movimiento. Esto es Unleashed y cualquier otra cosa no es ni pensable.

13-METALICOS-¿Cuál es tu opinion acerca de las audiencias latinoamericanas?

Anders/ De la poca experiencia que tenemos, ¡sabemos que ustedes son fans bien locos!

14-METALICOS-Listo, creo que con esto estamos bien por ahora. Quiero agradecerte de nuevo por este gran chance de entrar en contacto con tus fans en Costa Rica. Por favor danos tus últimas palabras. ¡Saludos!

Unleashed, classic Swedish death metal band, has been an unstoppable force since their first effort “Where No Life Dwells” in 1991. This is one of the few bands in the genre, instantly recognizable due to their trademark riffing, always powerful and full of hooks.

“As Yggdrasil Trembles”, the newest attack from these pioneers has just been released on Nuclear Blast, and it’s nothing less than the tenth studio album from a band which was practically the first to incorporate the Nordic mythology into death metal, years before Viking metal even existed.

Anders Schultz, the band’s drummer since their beginning in 1989, took the time to answer the questions that www.metalicos.com sent to him, and here you have the answers. Scandinavian death metal lovers, it´s time to bring out the axes!!!

1-METALICOS-Hello there, this is Mauricio on behalf of www.metalicos.com from Costa Rica, thanks for the opportunity to do this interview! How are you these days now that your new album has just been released?

Anders/ Hey Mauricio! We’re all doing great! Good to have the album out with such a good response and good to start going out and playing shows in support of it!

2-METALICOS-How do you feel about still being in a privileged position among both critics and fans almost after two decades? Did you ever dream of having such a long career in the first days?

Anders/ Feels killer of course! But no, I don’t think anyone could imagine where this would take us. Of course when you’re young you hardly believe you will survive this long haha...

3-METALICOS-Many bands put out a couple records where most of their best riffs are exhausted. But on your previous studio album, the powerful Hammer Battalion, the quality riffs were countless. How do you manage to remain at such an elevated creative level after so many years?

Anders/ I don’t know really. We just write what we write and it just seems to work. We do spend a lot of time with the songs. We start writing new material as soon as an album is out.

4-METALICOS-Let’s talk a little about your new album “As Yggdrasil Trembles”. Can you describe to us what we will hear?

Anders/ It will be a natural continuation of Hammer Battalion, and of what is Unleashed in general. We just try to develop within our style rather than change it.

5-METALICOS-Did you work on any specific concept or idea when composing the new album, both lyrically and musically?

Anders/ There is a bit of a concept lyrically, one which will be continued on the next album. As far as the music, we just -like I said- want to evolve what is Unleashed.

6-METALICOS-How about the recording process? Being an experienced band it doesn’t seem like you have to struggle in the studio but, did you face any challenges in order to put the whole thing together?

Anders/ No, it went pretty smooth the whole process. We’ve found a way of working that we are very comfortable with and I think that shows in the finished product. We definitely feel it when we are working which is good.

7-METALICOS-Do you have plans to tour Latin America in support of “As Yggdrasil Trembles”?

Anders/ No touring plans are yet set in stone but we do hope to be out a lot and of course to come over there as soon as we can.

8-METALICOS-After the last few years working with SPV, you decided to switch to Nuclear Blast. How do you feel about the change? What are your expectations?

Anders/ Well we definitely feel it's a big step in the right direction and we feel we will both benefit greatly from this new collaboration.

9-METALICOS-Will you shoot a video for any of the songs on the new album?

Anders/ Not sure yet. Maybe.

10-METALICOS-Did you compose many songs this time around? Was it hard to finally choose the 12 hymns that actually made it into the album?

Anders/ Since we work on the songs for such a long time and it's an always ongoing process, a lot of songs get scrapped during the way. But in the end the ones that remain are the ones that end up on the album.

11-METALICOS-If you look back in retrospect, what are the band’s achievements you feel more proud of?

Anders/ It's hard to say. Just to be still here doing this and being able to put out records and play shows is the biggest achievement really.

12-METALICOS-Radical experimentations never were part of your musical evolution through the years but, did you ever receive pressure / suggestions from either the label or media to try and change your style so you could reach a wider audience?

Anders/ No we were never pressured to do anything like that. I think even the labels realize that that would be a very bad move to do. This is Unleashed
and anything else is not really thinkable.

13-METALICOS-What is your opinion about the Latin American audiences?

Anders/ The little experience we have, we know you guys are crazy.
