Entrevista a Athelstan de Forefather

A continuación presentamos la entrevista realizada por nuestro colaborador Douglas Güell a Athelstan; guitarrista, bajista, teclados y coros del dúo británico FOREFATHER, quienes pronto editaran su quinto álbum “STEADFAST”

1. Gracias a Athelstan por otorgarnos algo de su tiempo en responder las siguientes preguntas. Creo que lo mejor antes de iniciar es que hagas una breve introducción sobre FOREFATHER para todos aquellos que no conocen la banda aun.

Para los que aun no nos conocen, ¿donde han estado?!!!. Nosotros empezamos la actividad desde 1997, creando metal pagano con influencias del metal tradicional y el black metal. Nuestras letras están concentradas en el periodo de la historia anglosajona y en la identidad propia de los ingleses hoy en día. Ocasionalmente nos autodenominamos “Anglo-Saxon Metal” aunque esta clase de etiquetas a veces son tontas. Hemos editado 4 discos en estudio “Deep into Time”, “The Fighting Man”, “Engla Tocyme” y “Ours is the Kingdom”. El próximo álbum se llama “Steadfast” y será realizado en unas cuantas semanas.

2. ¿Cual fue la principal razón que los llevo a conformar Forefather? Además ustedes autodenominan su estilo “Anglo-Saxon Metal”, cuéntanos más sobre el concepto en lo musical y temático que los rodea.

La principal razón que nos llevo a formar Forefather es que somos músicos y seguidores del metal, por lo tanto fue algo natural dar ese paso. Las razones que dirigen nuestras letras resaltan por nuestras influencias musicales, al tiempo que vamos más allá de quienes cantan sobre épocas oscuras del pasado, nuestro interés a crecido a nivel personal con respecto a los aspectos negativos de la identidad Inglesa hoy en día. Hemos empezado a aprender más y más sobre las “épocas oscuras” y como estás dan luz a nuestra cultura. Nos inspiramos en la historia, el lenguaje y la literatura propias del periodo Anglosajón, y como estos se conectan con nosotros en el siglo 21. Nos agrada utilizar de vez en cuando trozos de la vieja lengua inglesa en la música así realmente nos trae a la realidad esa conexión con la vida. Musicalmente hablando tenemos un vasto gusto musical pero con mayor fuerza en el metal Somos creativos con la melodía, y agregamos de vez en cuando elementos folk sutiles, pero soy renuente a llamarnos una banda de folk metal ; ya que es un término muy restrictivo y aburrido. Nos gusta crear material con sonido original.

3.aparte de FOREFATHER, tienen otras bandas o han participadfo en otras bandas

No, solamente estamos comprometidos con FOREFATHER, sin embargo hemos contribuido con dos temas en el proyecto internacional conocido como FOLKEARTH (“Rhyming with Thunder” y “The Lady’s Gift”). Esto nos es una banda como tal es más que todo un proyecto a larga distancia. Hemos tenido planes para proyectos en solitario que podrían ver o no la luz alguna vez. El tiempo lo dirá

4.¿Cuales bandas o músicos los han influenciado mayormente a traves del tiempo?

El Sr. Steven Harris y los álbumes clásicos de Iron Maiden son siempre sujetos de reverencias por parte de nosotros. Más actualmente los discos de Immortal, Emperor y Satyricon; Varg Vikernes, Chuck Schuldiner, December Moon, Bathory, Abigor…. Nos agradan muchas bandas. En este momento estoy escuchando Pagan´s Mind, son excelentes. Me agrada toda clase de metal original.

5. Su quinto y más esperado álbum titulado “STEADFAST” (FIRME) saldrá entre el 8 y el 15 de febrero, por favor cuéntanos más sobre este; ¿Que significa para ustedes?; ¿Cuál es el tema central?, ¿Cuan largo fue el trabajo puesto en el? Y finalmente sus esperanzas en cuanto a “STEADFAST”

El título se relaciona con la idea de permanecer fiel en lo que crees en tu interior e intentar permanecer sano en el mundo moderno. La sociedad nos bombardea todos los días por lo que debemos cree en nosotros mismos y resistir lo mejor posible, debemos sacar toda la basura de nuestras mentes de la mejor manera. Este no es en si el concepto general del disco ya que nos extendemos a algunas batallas famosas como las de Brunanburh, Hengist y Horsa y las creencias tribales de Theodish que son importantes para el sentimiento de integrar una comunidad. Nos tomo una eternidad realizar este álbum tres años para ser exactos paro lo hicimos. Mis esperanzas son simplemente que la gente la considere un gran álbum, y que quizás despierte algo en ellos mismos.

6.¿Como ves la escena metal en general en el Reino Unido y el metal pagano hoy en día?

En los últimos años ha ganado mucho más renombre, hay más gente envuelta en esta asunto lo malo son las bandas que clonan sonidos con álbumes muy repetitivos. La explosión de popularidad que han tenido agrupaciones de “Folk” y “Viking” nos permitirán tener quizás mejores ventas, aunque no nos consideramos una banda que se encasille es estos estilos. Lo bueno es que al ser más popular genera más dinero, más negocios, más grupos, más discos, giras, mercancía… blah blah

7. ¿Qué es lo que más quieres y lo que más odias de este mundo?

Podría tardarme todo el día en esta pregunta, así que lo hare corto lo que más quiero es a mi familia y lo que odio Trivium

8. Tienen planeado hacer conciertos con nuevos miembros o al menos con músicos de sesión, me gustaría como su seguidor escuchar alguna vez un disco de FOREFATHER en directo?

O nos gustaría tocar en vivo. Hacer un disco juntos es lo suficientemente estresante, imagínate organizar conciertos ensayos sería una pesadilla. Realmente no deseamos meternos en todo eso, lamento cualquier desilusión

9. Ustedes son dueños de un joven sello disquero Seven Kingdoms”, por favor cuéntanos mas sobre esa faceta, que discos ha realizado, el apoyo de los fans (buenas o malas ventas) y de otros sitios, los problemas que encuentran con los piratas en internet

Seven Kindoms nació de las cenizas de “Angelisc Enterprises” ¡que nadie podría pronunciar correctamente! Se fundó en el 2004 y al día de hoy hemos lanzado un excelente disco del grupo holandés THRONAR “For Death and Glory” (el cual se encuentra agotado) además de una gran obra del prolífico LON con su banda HELLVETO “Stos”. Trabajar en el sello es relajante so lo sabes manejar sabiamente. Solo haremos un disco si encontramos algo que nos guste, eso es raro (risas).

La nueva producción es STEADFAST (dentro de unas semanas) y está disponible en preventa la cual va muy bien. Hemos decidido que la mejor manera de beneficiarnos de nuestro trabajo hoy en día era lanzarlo por nosotros mismos. No hay necesidad de tener un intermediario en este caso un sello disquero " cuando lo único que realmente deseamos hacer es poner las cosas en un CD. Tenemos el conocimiento y la experiencia adquiridos durante 8 años. Hace unos mese desechamos nuestro servicio de distribución y pedidos por correo cuando vimos la poca importancia para nosotros de comerciar con otros cedes, Nuestros planes inmediatos para la disquera son tratar solamente con FOREFATHER, será una lucha con poco o nada de dinero pero la ventaja principal es forjar nuestro propio destino. Cada uno aprende en base a su experiencia sobre la piratería, nosotros los hemos encontrado rara vez pero creemos que muchas disqueras que lanzas cedes miserables son piratas en si mismas.

10.Gracias por su tiempo; les deseo lo mejor para el álbum “STEADFAST”, unas últimas palabras para los lectores de Metalicos?

1.First of all thanks to you Athelstan for taking some time to answer the following questions. I think it would be a good start if you could introduce your band briefly to those who might not know you yet.

If you don’t know us, then where have you been?! We have been active since 1997 and we create heathen metal with black and traditional metal influences. Our lyrics concentrate on the anglo-saxon period of history, and english identity in the modern day. We occasionally call ourselves “Anglo-Saxon Metal”, although these kind of labels are quite silly really. We have released 4 albums: Deep into Time, The Fighting Man, Engla Tocyme and Ours is the Kingdom. Our latest, “Steadfast” will be released in a few weeks.

2.What was the main reason for you to found Forefather? And also, You play your own trademark of metal called “Anglo-Saxon Metal” tell us more about the lyrics & music concept?

The main reason was because we were musicians and metal fans, so it’s natural to make that step. The reasons for our lyrical direction was sparked by our musical influences at the time who were singing about their dark age past, but our interest grew to a personal level regarding the (negative) state of English identity in the modern day. We began to learn more and more about the “dark ages” and how they were really the “light” of our culture. We are inspired by the history, language and literature of the AS period, and how it connects to us in the 21st century. We like to occasionally use pieces of old English language in the music as it really brings the reality of that connection to life. Musically, we just make what we like the sound of. We have wide-ranging musical tastes, but generally we like the sound of Metal. We are creative with melody, and occasionally add in subtle folk elements, but I’m reluctant to call us a folk metal band; that’s a very restrictive and tiresome term. We like to create original sounding stuff!

3.Do you have other bands that you play with?

No, so far we are only committed to FOREFATHER, although we have contributed a couple of songs to the FOLKEARTH project (“Rhyming with Thunder” and “The Lady’s Gift”). This is not really the same as being in a band though; it is more a long-distance musical project. We have numerous plans for solo projects which may or may not see the light of day. Time will tell.

4.Which bands or musicians have you been influenced by through the years (and currently)?

Mr Steven Harris and his classic Iron Maiden albums is always a subject of reverence for us. Early Immortal, Emperor, Satyricon albums. Varg Vikernes, Chuck Schuldiner, December Moon, Bathory, Abigor…….we like a lot of Metal. At the moment I’m listening to Pagan’s Mind; they are excellent. I like any good metal that’s original.

5. Your new & much anticipated fifth album titled “STEADFAST”will be out soon, please tell us more about this album; What does the title of the album mean for you guys? What is the main-concept or theme?, How long was the work for this release? And finally your hopes in the album?

The title is really about staying true to what you believe in and trying to stay sane in the modern world. We are bombarded by so much nonsense from society that we must stay true to nature’s harsh reality and what relates to us best. We need to “filter” the crap out of our minds as best we can. There is no overall concept to the album, but we have subjects ranging from the famous battle of Brunanburh, to Hengist and Horsa, and the idea of Theodish (tribal) belief being important for a strong sense of community. It took an eternity to create! (3 years) But at last, after much struggle it is done. My hopes are simply that people will consider it a great album, and maybe it will awaken something in them.

6.Where you see the UK Metalscene and the Heathen metal scene in the present?

n recent years it has gained a lot more popularity, even to say “mainstream”, which I don’t really like, but I suppose it is healthy to have more people involved, although it does create a myriad clone bands with very dull albums. The popularity of “Folk” and “Viking” type bands has seen an explosion of this type of music, which will probably be good for our sales, even though I certainly don’t consider us to be either a folk or Viking metal band!! Overall, yes, it is more popular and there seems to be a lot more money, business, advertising, bands, albums, tours, merchandise, blah blah. I’m somewhat “overloaded”.

7.What do you hate and love mostly on this earth?

I could be here all day, so I will keep it short: Love - family. Hate - Trivium

8. Live gigs with some new or sessions members?; I am a huge fan of yours, and I was wondering if you will have the opportunity to release a live album in the future? anything planned there? - How do you envision the future of the band?

It’s very unlikely that we will ever play live. Making an album together is stressful enough, so organising concerts and rehearsals would be a nightmare. We really don’t want the hassle of that at the moment. Sorry for any disappointment.

9. You have a label called Seven Kingdoms, please tell us more about it, you know: releases, support of customers (good sales) and others websites, future plans, problems with the Internet pirates…

Seven Kingdoms was born from the ashes of “Angelisc Enterprises”, which nobody could pronounce properly! It’s been alive since 2004 and has released a superb CD by the Dutch band THRONAR – “For Death and Glory” (currently sold out) and also a great opus of the prolific LON of HELLVETO, “Stos”. It is a fairly relaxed label (activity wise); we do a release only when we find something we like; hence the rarity haha! The latest release is STEADFAST (due in a few weeks) and in pre-order terms it is so far very successful. We decided that the best way to benefit from our own work in the current climate was to release it ourselves. There is no need for us to have a “middleman” record label when all we really want to do is put the thing on a CD. We have the knowledge (just about!) and experience from the past 8 years. In recent months we have discarded our mail-order service as we began to see the futility of “trading” for other CDs. Our plans for the label are to solely deal with FOREFATHER for the foreseeable future. It can be a struggle, and there is little or no money in it, but the major benefit is control over your own destiny! You learn from experience about pirates, although I have to say we have encountered them rarely. You could say that many of these labels that release woeful CDs are pirates in themselves.
