1. Hola Daniel, gracias por la oportunidad y bienvenido a las páginas de METALICOS.COM

Daniel: Gracias por la oportunidad! Justo ahora voy en camino a Alemania para rockear en serio!

2. ¿Háblanos un poco de tu carrera como músico y productor, como llega un chileno como Daniel Flores a Suecia y como se desarrolla en el ambiente europeo?

Daniel: Bueno, para empezar necesitas comprender un lenguaje completamente nuevo y tienes que adaptarte a un nuevo mundo. Hice eso además que ingresé en el negocio como baterista y sigo ahí. En años recientes he descubierto la parte de la producción en la música. Algo que siempre he amado pero nunca empecé hasta hace un par de años. Ahora las cosas no podrían ir mejor y de hecho acabo de firmar mi primer contrato con “Catapult Music Group” acá en Suecia como escritor, productor e ingeniero. Estoy trabajando bajo la tutela de Magnus Soderkvist quien es uno de los mejores de Suecia en el desarrollo de artistas de rock n roll. El mercado europeo es pequeño y es por eso que he podido hacerme un nombre acá, si estuviera viviendo en USA las cosas serían más difíciles pero sé que igual sería exitoso trabajando en lo que amo.

3. La mayoría de tu trabajo se centra en el medio Hard Rock, Melodic Rock y AOR, ¿por qué?

Daniel: Sí, no sé? Creo que he sido un poco tipificado realmente. Amo muchos estilos pero el Metal y el Progresivo han sido buenos empleadores para mí. Este año estoy trabajando en cosas interesantes de Pop y Rock Contemporáneo así que espérenlo!

4. Has tocado para músicos de renombre como Chris Catena, Tommy Denander (Deacon Street) y Philip Bardowell entre muchos otros. ¿Cómo llega Daniel Flores a tocar con ellos?, cuéntanos sobre esas experiencias

Daniel: Sí, la mayoría de esas experiencias fueron hermosas excepto dos que salieron mal más que todo por el ego de los mismos músicos. No voy a decir nombres pero puedo decir que los más talentosos siempre son los más comprensivos y los “primadonnas” son siempre los menos talentosos. Trabajo mucho con Tommy Denander y el me consigue muchos trabajos pero estoy esperando con ansias más cosas nuevas ahora que estoy con Catapult Music y Magnus.

5. Daniel el músico creo que ya muchos lo conocen, pero el productor es otra historia, ¿Cómo y cuándo decides entrar en el mercado de la producción?

Daniel: Es algo que vino a mí después de una larga carrera con Mind’s Eye donde yo estaba realmente produciendo los discos, no era el único involucrado pero era parte esencial de esos discos, especialmente los últimos que han sido los más exitosos. Todo empezó ahí y luego me pidieron producir discos para otra gente... creo que Xsavior fue el disco que realmente me abrió muchas puertas, además el disco de Novak y “A Gentleman’s Hurricane” de Mind’s Eye el cuál hasta hoy es mi mejor disco en materia de producción. En este momento estoy produciendo para esta banda llama “Murder My Sweet” y creo que este disco será visto por mucha gente como el mejor ya que hasta ahora es increíble. La vocalista Angelica Rylin tiene un talento asombroso y va a dejar detrás a todos en este mercado.

6. ¿Cuál consideras ha sido hasta la fecha el trabajo de producción más satisfactorio, el que mejor has hecho?

Daniel: Como dije. Tiene que ser “A Gentleman’s Hurricane” de Mind’s Eye. No veo nada que se le acerce y posiblemente nada lo logre, por eso estoy llevando mis talentos en otra dirección. Creo que si voy a hacer otro disco progresivo tiene que ser por una muy buena razón... en este punto de mi carrera me estoy concentrando en música mucho más comercial.

7. Todos los músicos del mundo tiene influencias y fuentes de inspiración ¿cuáles son las tuyas?

Daniel: Hombre, puede ser cualquier cosa en este hermoso planeta. Cualquier cosa desde mi madre a mis baquetas. Soy fácil de complacer y puedo adaptarme a cualquier tipo de reto. Me veo a mí mismo como un camaleón musical y cambio de ropa dependiendo de la ocasión o situación musical. Amo a la gente y a través de ellos es que encuentro la mayor parte de mi inspiración, me gusta escuchar historias tanto tristes como con finales felices. Como dijo Keith Richards, las canciones están en el aire y es cosa tuya atraparlas. Eso es todo.

8. ¿Qué has estado escuchando recientemente? ¿cuáles grupos te han llamado la atención en los últimos meses o semanas?

Daniel: El último de Ozzy, Alter Bridge, My Chemical Romance, el nuevo de Kip Winger, Breaking Benjamin y mucha música de soundtrack de Danny elfman, Alan Silvestri y John Williams. También he escuchado bastante el soundtrack de “Sweeney Todd” el cuál en mi opinión es de quedarse con la boca abierta...

El Mundo

9. ¿Qué tan importante consideras que puede ser una disquera en éxito de un grupo?

Daniel: En porcentajes está dividido 50% la compañía, 50% la banda.

10. En América estos géneros (Hard Rock, Melodic Rock y AOR) habían pasado casi al olvido, ¿Ha habido un resurgimiento de los mismo en los últimos años? ¿Sucedió lo mismo en Europa?

Daniel: Oh Dios no! En Europa es una locura lanzar un disco de AOR por ejemplo. Un renacimiento nunca ocurrirá pero las ideas musicales volverán, pero nunca de la misma forma que en los 80s y 90s.

11. En Europa estos géneros parecen tener un fuerte apoyo y una base sólida con sellos disqueros como Lion Music, MTM, Frontiers, etc., que apuestan a los grupos clásicos y los nuevos valores. ¿Ha sido así siempre o es algo más reciente?

Daniel: Sí, desde finales de los 90s la mayoría de estos sellos han dominado el pequeño charco del Metal, Prog y AOR... Aunque están haciendo un gran trabajo con nuevos músicos ninguno está haciendo dinero de esto. Es triste ver bandas talentosas sin entradas de dinero...

12. ¿Qué tan importante se ha convertido Internet como herramienta de difusión para los grupos?

Daniel: Podría ayudar pero en su mayoría no ha hecho nada... todo depende de cuánto tiempo inviertas en ello... creo que MySpace hace más por las bandas que los websites... Las cosas cambian... hoy en día se trata de sacar tu música rápidamente si no te firman.

13. Así como herramienta de difusión, también se ha convertido en un dolor de cabeza para mucho con la piratería ¿Qué opinas al respecto, cuanto ha afectado esto al mercado discográfico?

Daniel: Es malo que nadie reciba la paga por su trabajo... los que bajan música no son los únicos culpables sino también los vagos jefes de disquera.

Mind’s Eye

14. Hasta momento me atrevo a decir que 2007 y el disco A Gentleman’s Hurricane es el punto más alto en la carrera de Mind’s Eye. ¿Cuéntanos cómo nace A Gentleman’s Hurricane, que te motivo a hacer un disco conceptual?

Daniel: Bueno, estaba muy motivado mientras escribía este álbum... y por supuesto se nota mientras los escuchas. Tiene de todo en mi opinión.

Quería hacer algo que tuviera una vida útil mayor que un disco normal y por eso cree todas las cosas a su alrededor. Ha sido una jornada hermosa y he aprendido muchísimo en el camino.

Otra cosa que creo es excelente es que deja un legado para otros, normalmente las bandas progresivas no trabajan tanto en un disco conceptual como nosotros. Veo bandas como Seventh Wonder, Shadrane y otros tratando de hacer algo similar. Es un gran sentimiento cuando otros artistas se quitan el sombrero de esta manera. Qué más le puedes pedir a la vida después de eso?

16. ¿Cuánto te llevó crear la historia completa y plasmarla en un disco?

Daniel: Demasiado tiempo para escribirlo todo. Lo más difícil fue mantener todas las partes juntas. Mucha gente no sabe que yo era el que sostenía todo junto y es demasiado trabajo para una sola persona... Como puedes notar los resultados fueron buenos pero estuvo a punto de divorciarme y tuve que tomar dos vacaciones durante ese tiempo. El concepto y la historia tomaron 6 meses para escribirse y todo el disco un año para grabarse.

No le recomendaría a nadie hacer algo similar ya que consume mucho tiempo y al final ni siquiera sabes si valió la pena.

17. ¿Cúal es la historia? Puedes darnos a grandes rasgos una sinopsis de ella.

Daniel: Adam Evangelista es un asesino casi retirado (con poco más de 50 años) quien tiene un trabajo más por hacer. Su remordimiento lo ha consumido a un nivel donde cree que necesita renunciar a su trabajo. Encuentra una vieja iglesia y habla con el sacerdote de la misma, un padre retirado llamado Caballero Di Mori.

Mientras Adam abre su corazón a su nuevo amigo todos aprendemos que Adam es en realidad el hombre detrás de la mayoría de los asesinatos políticos sin resolver más grandes del mundo.

Pero la historia va más allá mientras Adam y Caballero se empiezan a conocer más. Parece que comparten más que historias, ellos comparten un pasado.

18. Aunque son historias diferentes, involucran personajes en la misma línea, el gobierno, la CIA, un asesino. ¿A Gentleman’s Hurricane ha sido comparado con Operation: Mindcrime de Queensrÿche? (Si no ha sido así entonces soy el primero en hacerlo jejeje)

Daniel: Sí, es un verdadero honor ser comparado con esa historia pero creo que la nuestra tiene más hechos y menos basura en ella... si sabes a lo que me refiero. OPM es una de esas historias que te pone a pensar “wow que gran historia” pero la nuestra hará que digas: “wow esto pudiera ser verdad”. Y la gente de hecho me ha preguntado si sé algo de cierta gente que no debería... yo simplemente me río y a veces digo: “Quién sabe?”

19. Into The Unknown fue el disco debut de Mind’s Eye, sin embargo es hasta Walking On H2O que el nombre del grupo comienza a sonar fuerte. ¿Se debió esto al hecho de que firmaran con Lion Music o a que el disco en sí llamó la atención de la crítica y los medios?

Daniel: Aunque LION MUSIC ha sido un gran sello no tuvo nada que ver con eso. Todo tiene que ver con nuestra música siendo más atractiva para las masas. En los primeros discos éramos demasiado “shreddy” y ahora hemos encontrado nuestro escenario y nuestra meta.

20. Este fue uno de los discos más elogiados por la crítica en 2007 ¿Qué hizo la diferencia con A Gentleman’s Hurricane en relación a sus discos anteriores?

Daniel: Para mí es obvio que es por la cantidad de calidad que se muestra en este disco tanto sónica como musical. Mientras nos volvemos mejores y mejores en lo que hacemos creo que la gente nos empieza a reconocer. Nunca vamos a hacer un álbum de puro “shred” como DT porque no es lo que somos pero hemos estado en el negocio suficiente tiempo para probar que somos una banda que se merece atención. Nos enfocamos en las melodías y buenos temas, el resto se lo dejamos a la gente de circo allá afuera.

Eso es todo creo.

21. Una de las preguntas que siempre no hemos hecho es con respecto a Andreas Novak, ¿quién es Andreas, quién descubre a este gran vocalista, cómo lo conociste y como llega a Mind’s Eye?

Daniel: Yo lo descubrí. Le pedí que se nos uniera y el aceptó gustoso. No hubo plan maestro. Lo escuché cantar en la escuela de música acá en Estocolmo. Cantó “Kyrie Elision” de Mr Mister y me impresionó. Andreas también es un buen guitarrista así que por eso se adapta a esta banda, no solamente es un cantante sino también (y más importante) un músico.

22. ¿Consideras a Mind’s Eye una banda Metal Progresivo? Si no es así ¿cómo la catalogarías?

Daniel: Bueno, progresivo es solamente una pequeña parte de lo que hacemos. Nos etiquetaría como “Músicos haciendo música” qué tal?

23. Yo compré la edición especial de A Gentleman’s Hurricane la cual me pareció fantástica ¿de quién fue la idea de incluir un DVD con el Making Of…? y ¿por qué no incluyeron en ella la canción Those Who Fear?

Daniel: La idea fue mía. Quise darle a la audiencia algo fresco y único. La canción “Those Who Fear” también está incluída en el DVD, si tomas el tiempo de ver la parte de Créditos del DVD puedes escuchar la canción sonar mientras los nombres bajan.

24. Feed My Revolver fue el sencillo, ¿por qué esa?

Daniel: Simple, es la canción más pegajosa del álbum. Además tiene una buena historia acerca del asesinato de JF Kennedy, quien en mi historia fue asesinado por Adam Evangelista.

25. ¿Por qué el vídeo se hizo en forma de historieta, de quien fue la idea?

Daniel: También mía... lo siento pero he tenido esta idea desde hace tiempo y lo he estado organizando como desde que nací... *risas*

26. ¿Se establecerá Mind’s Eye con un grupo de planta y no solo de estudio?

Daniel: Espero que no porque no queremos mucho ruido a nuestro alrededor ya que todos somos gente creativa que necesitamos nuestra privacidad y nuestro tiempo.

28. ¿Hubo o habrá una gira en el futuro?

Daniel: Lamento decir que no. En este punto no tenemos nada programado para este año. Me encantaría... creo que somos demasiado caros.

29. ¿Qué sigue en el futuro inmediato de Daniel Flores, el músico y productor y en el de Mind’s Eye?

Daniel: Principalemente dos cosas. Primero “Murder My Sweet” que tendrá toda mi atención y luego Daniel Flores el baterista y productor. Haré mucha buena música con mi nuevo manager Magnus y “Catapult Music Group”.

1. Hi Daniel, thank you for the opportunity and welcome to METALICOS.COM

Daniel: Thanks for the opportunity you guys! Right now I am on my way to Germany for some serious rocking!

2. Tell us a little bit about your career as a musician and producer, how does a Chilean like Daniel Flores arrive to Sweden and starts working in the European market?

Daniel: Well, for starters you need to learn a completely different language then you will have to adapt yourself to a whole new world. I did that plus I entered the drumming market and made it there and I still am. In recent years I have discovered the production part of music. Something which I have always loved but never seem to have taken off until for a couple of years ago. Right now things couldn’t be better and actually I have signed my first contract with “Catapult music group” here in Sweden as Song writer, Producer, Engineer. I’m working under Magnus Soderkvist which is one of Swedens best A&R for rock n roll. The European market is kind of small so that’s why I have been able to make my self a name here, if I was living in USA things would be harder but I know that would still be as successful doing what I love.

3. Most of your work revolves around hard rock, melodic rock and AOR, why is that?

Daniel: Yes, I don’t know? I think I have been kind of typecast really. I love lots of styles but Metal and prog has been a good employer for me. This year I’m getting in some really interesting stuff in both pop and contemporary rock so what out for that!

4. You’ve played for renowned musicians like Chris Catena, Tommy Denander (Deacon Street) and Phillip Bardowell among others. How does Daniel Flores manage to accomplish that? Tell us about those experiences.

Daniel: Yeah, most of these experiences are beautiful but one or two have gone bad mostly because of the egos of the musicians themselves. I wont name any names here but I can say that the most talented are always the most understanding and the primadonnas are always the non talented people.
I work allot withTommy Denander and he gives me lots of jobs but I’m looking forward to play on much more new stuff now that I’m with Catapult Music and Magnus.

5. Daniel the musician is known to a lot of people, but Daniel the producer probably not, how and when did you decide to start producing records?

Daniel: It’s something that came to me after a long career with Mind’s Eye where I actually was producing the records, I wasn’t the only one involved off course but I had a essential part of those records, especially the last ones which are more successful. It all started there and from that I was asked to produce other peoples records… I think Xsavior was a record which really opened lots of doors for me, also the Novak record and Mind’s Eye “ A gentleman’s hurricane” which until this day is my very best record “producing” wise. I love holding things together and as I get older I get better at the art of recording and producing. Right now I’m producing this band called “Murder my sweet” and right now I think this will be a record many people will see as my best as until this far it’s incredible. The singer Angelica Rylin is an amazing talent and she will blow away everything in this market.

6. To date, what do you consider your best production work?

Daniel: Like I said. It has to be “Mind’s Eye – A gentleman’s hurricane”. I don’t see anything coming near this and probably nothing ever will, that’s why I’m taking my talents elsewhere. I feel that if I’m gonna do a progressive metal record again it has to be a really good reason… I’m concentrating on much more commercial music at this point of my career.

7. All musicians have different influences and sources of inspiration. What are yours?

Daniel: Man, could be anything in this beautiful planet. Everything from my mother to my drumsticks. I’m easily humored and can adapt myself into any kid of challenge. I see my self as a musical chameleon and I change my clothes depending on the occasion or musical situation. I love people and trough that I try to find most of my inspiration, I love to hear stories both sad and happy endings. Like Keith Richards said, all songs are up there in the air and it’s up to you to catch them. Enough said.

8. What have you been listening to lately? What groups have called your attention recently?

Daniel: The latest Ozzy, Alter Bridge, My chemical romance, the new Kip Winger, Breaking Benjamin, and lot’s of score music from Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri and John Williams. I also have listed much to the “Sweeney Todd” soundtrack which is nothing but jaw dropping IMO…

The World

9. How important is a record label for a group’s success?

Daniel: In % it’s divided in 50% the record company and 50% the band.

10. In America, genres like Hard Rock, Melodic Rock and AOR had pretty much disappeared. Do you think there’s been a rebirth for these genres in the past few years? Did the same happen in Europe?

Daniel: Oh god no! In Europe it’s totally crazy to release an AOR album for instance. A rebirth will never happen but the musical ideas will comeback again but never in the same outfit as they did in the 80’s and 90’s.

11. In Europe these genres seem to have strong support from record companies like Lion Music, MTM, Frontiers, and others who are betting on classic and newer groups. Has it always been like this or is it a recent phenomenon?

Daniel: Yes, since the late 90’s most of these labels have ruled the small pond of Metal, prog and AOR community… While they are all doing a great job for upcoming musicians noone is making any profit out of it. It’s sad to see talented bands with no income at all…

12. How important is the Internet as a distribution tool for groups?

Daniel: It could be helpful but to most it has done nothing… it all depends of how much time u put in to it… I think Myspace does more for bands than actual websites do… Things change… today it’s all about getting your music out there fast if you are not signed.

13. As important as it may be for distribution, Internet has also become a headache for many because of piracy. What’s your opinion about his, how has it affected the recording business.

Daniel: Bad as no one is getting paid for their work… Down loaders are not the only ones to blame but all the lazy label bosses too.

Mind’s Eye

14. I believe 2007 and the record A Gentleman’s Hurricane have been the highlights of Mind’s Eye’s career. Tell us how was A Gentleman’s Hurricane born, what motivated you to create a concept album?

Daniel: Well, I was very motivated when I was writing this album… and off course you can tell that by listening to it. It has everything in there IMO.

I wanted to do something that would live much longer than your normal album and that’s why we created all things around it. It has been a beautiful journey and I have learnt much by doing it.

Another thing which I think is great is the legacy it leaves for others to pick up, normally progressive bands won’t go the lengths we have gone to do a concept album. I see bands like Seventh Wonder, Shadrane and others that want to do something similar. It’s a great feeling when other artists lift off their hats this way. What more can you want out of life after that?

15. How long did it take to create the whole story and then record it?

Daniel: Too long to write it all down here. The most difficult thing was to keep it all together. Most people don’t know that I was the one holding the pieces together and it’s way too much work for one man… As you all can see the results are good but I was close to a divorce and I had to take two vacations during this time. The concept and story took 6 months to write and the whole album 1 year to record.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone to do something like this as it’s a time consuming craft and in the end you don’t even know if it’s worth it.

16. Can you give us a brief summary of the story?

Daniel: Adam Evangelista is an almost to be retired assassin (in his early 50’s) who has one more job to do. His guilt has consumed him to a level where he thinks he needs to quit his job. He finds an old church and speaks to the priest of that church, a retired priest called Caballero Di Mori.

As Adam open his heart for his new found friend we all learn that Adam is actually the man behind most unsolved big political assassinations in this world.

But the story goes beyond that and as Adam and Caballero get to know each other more. They seem to share more than stories, they both share a past.

17. Even though the stories are different, they both involve characters along the lines of government officials, the CIA, murderers. Has A Gentleman’s Hurricane been compared to Queensryche’s Operation: Mindcrime? (if not, then I’m first jeje)

Daniel: Yeah, it’s a true honor to be compared to this story but I think ours has more facts and less bullshit in it… If you know what I mean. OPM is one of those stories that would have you thinking wow what a great story but our will have you saying: Wow this might be true! And people have actually asked me if I know something that people shouldn’t know about… I just laugh my ass off when I get that… and sometimes I say: Who knows?

18. Into The Unknown was the debut album for Mind’s Eye, but it wasn’t until Walking on H2O that the band started getting more attention. Was this due to the fact that you had signed with Lion Music or was it just that the album itself appealed more to critics and audience in general?

Daniel: Altough LION MUSIC being a great label it has nothing to do with it. It’s all about our music getting more appealing to the masses. In earlier albums we where too ”Shredy” and now we found our stage and goal.

19. A Gentleman’s Hurricane was one of the most praised records of 2007. What was the difference between this album and the previous recordings by Mind’s Eye?

Daniel: To me it’s obvious that its amount of quality given in this record both sonically and musically. As we all get better and better all the time on what we do I think people get to know us. We will never make a shredding DT album because that’s not us but we have been around long enough to prove that we are a band worth checking out. We are all about melodies and cool songs the rest we live up to the circus people out there.

That’s it I think.

20. We have always wondered about Andreas Novak. Who is he, who discovered him, how did you meet him, and how does he start working with Mind’s Eye?

Daniel: I did. I asked him to join and he was glad to do so. No master plan. I hear him sing in music school here in Stockholm. He sang “Kyrie Elision” of Mr. Mister and I was completely blown away by that. Andreas is an good guitar player too and that’s why he fits in this band, he is not just a singer he is also (most importantly) a musician.

21. Would you consider Mind’s Eye as a Progressive Metal band? If not, how would you label it?

Daniel: Well, progressive is just a small part of what we do. I would label us as

“Musicians doing music” how’s that?

22. I bought the special edition of A Gentleman’s Hurricane and thought it was fantastic. Whose idea was it to include a DVD with the Making Of? And why didn’t you include the song Those Who Fear?

Daniel: The whole idea was mine. I wanted to give the audience something fresh and unique. The song “those who fear” is also included in the DVD if you take time to go trough the “Credit’s” part of the DVD you can hear this song play along as you see names drop by.

23. Feed My Revolver was the album’s single, why did you choose that one?

Daniel: Simple it’s the most catchiest song on the album. Also because it has a cool story about the assassination of JF Kennedy which in my story was murdered by Adam Evangelista.

24. Why was the video made like a comic book? Whose idea was that?

Daniel: Mine too… I’m sorry but I hade this idea for a long time and been organizing this since birth it seems…LOL

Off course Fredrik Englund took it to a level where I had never imagined but the original idea was completely mine.

Por supuesto Fredrik Englund lo llevó a un nivel que nunca hubiera imaginado pero la idea original fue completamente mía.

25. Will Mind’s Eye become an established group?

Daniel: I hope not as we don’t want too much buzz around us as we are all creative people who need our privacy and own time.

26. Has there been or will there be any touring for Mind’s Eye?

Daniel I’m sorry to say no. At this point we have nothing scheduled for this year. We would love to have tough… I think we are too expensive.

27. What does the immediate future hold for Daniel Flores?

Daniel: Mainly two things. First “Murder my sweet” which will have my full focus and then Daniel Flores the drummer and producer. I will make lot’s of good music together with my new manager Magnus and management “Catapult music group”.
