Almost 19 years after having started their career, and with several classic albums on their legacy, the band is in a great moment. Their last two albums have found a ‘better than usual’ reception among the critics and their activity is unstoppable.
Time has seen their style change completely from what they did on Brave Murder Day and Discouraged Ones, their more celebrated old works; however, knowing the potential of doom and depressive rock, they’ve walked into territories where a delicate and refined darkness has become their trademark; and they’ve doing it for more than ten years under the wing of Peaceville Records, with whom they seem to keep a great relationship.
All these subjects which I just mentioned were part of the interview with Daniel Liljekvist, drummer of the band since 1999, who agreed to answer the questions from metalicos.com. Read this interview listening to any of the hymns on either The Great Cold Distance or Night is the New Day; if you submerge your soul in the correct mood, I guarantee you that Katatonia will be your perfect spell.
Special thanks to Paul form Peaceville Records for his assistance on arranging this interview.
1-METALICOS-Hello there! This is Mauricio from www.metalicos.com in Costa Rica. Thanks a lot for taking some of your time to get in touch with your Latin American fans! How are you? How do you feel about the current response to your latest album “Night is the New Day”?
DANIEL/ Hey! Yeah, I'm fine. The response has been fantastic both from the crowds on the tour and sales wise. Quite remarkable in these times.
2-METALICOS-Despite having created very influential classics like “Brave Murder Day” or “Discouraged Ones”, I have noticed that it’s in your last two records, where the media has begun to consistently use terms like “exceptional”, “masterpiece” or “extraordinary”, just like the band was reaching a point where a nearly 20 year potential is finally exploding. Do you agree with this opinion? Why do you think that both media and fans are being so impressed by your latest albums?
DANIEL/ I think it's just in the last ten years Katatonia has been a proper band with a solid lineup. We have found our own exclusive sound and we're constantly tweeking and bending the sound as we want it to sound and if we succeed in making fans and pleasing the media it's just a bonus.
3-METALICOS-And on a personal level, how do you feel as musicians when you see that your art is being admired like this?
DANIEL/ Of course it's flattering and an acknowledgment to sell out shows and sell records. It's been my dream since I was a kid and now I'm doing it. Fantastic!
4-METALICOS-If I’m not mistaken; the only Latin American country that you have visited so far is Mexico in 2007. How was the experience of playing in front of a Latin audience?
DANIEL/ It was something extra to say the least. It wasn't a big venue but I think there were about 800-900 people there and they were absolutely crazy! Even after the show people almost stormed our hotel. It will be pretty cool to go back there and visit some more countries.
5-METALICOS-Are you in touch with Latin American fans, or fans from faraway places in general, like Asia for example? If so, what kind of comments do you receive?
DANIEL/ I see comments on our Facebook site but that's pretty much it. It's everywhere from South America to Australia to Japan. The comments are basically "Come to *country* please!!!!!!!!!!!". They should really write that to our management instead...haha!
6-METALICOS-You have confirmed a North American tour for September and October with Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land as main support bands. What do you expect from this tour?
DANIEL/ To be honest, I have no idea what to expect. I know that it's gonna be a pretty smooth busride as we are sharing it with STS, as we did on the latest euro tour. Lots of greasy burgers too. But I really hope for some sold out shows and good venues.
7-METALICOS-Our country has been experiencing a recent “heavy metal explosion” with some big concerts (Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, all for the first time), and some kids are camping outside of the venues 2 or 3 weeks before the concerts so they can be first to the barrier… have you seen something like that anywhere else? What do you think about the level of passion that metalheads feel for their music?
DANIEL/ Yeah, metal fans are really devoted to their music and idols. I don't know if they are more passionate than the Michael Jackson fans, if you know what I mean. But it's cool to see a real metalhead with leather clothes and patches from every metal band in the world. We are not really in that category but sure, we have our fair share of headbangers in the front row, even if they often yawn.
8-METALICOS-It is very likely that all bands go through rough periods during their career for many different reasons. In the case of Katatonia, have you ever felt like you wanted to end everything with the band? How have you managed to overcome bad moments?
DANIEL/ I don't know if we have experienced that yet. Of course we've had some word fights and disagreements, all bands have, but it's never gone as far as someone leaving or thinking of leaving the band. Well, I did once on the 2006 US tour, but I was drunk and the tour was shit so I said I would leave as soon as the tour was over. One is not very rational when drunk.
9-METALICOS-You have been working with Peaceville Records since 1999 if I’m not wrong, are you still satisfied with the job they do for the band? Do you plan to continue with them?
DANIEL/ I think Peaceville is good. Everything we did on the last album was great, we got three singles, we got three videos out of it. We got a lot of support and they are very easy to talk to.
10-METALICOS-Today more than ever, the metal world seems to be producing band after band after band (some of them real good no doubt about it), but what’s your opinion about this? Are we overpopulating the scene? Is it easier or harder for the older bands to keep their status now?
DANIEL/ Competition is always good I think, it keeps you focused to make the best you can. Keeping status doesn't have anything to do with new bands coming up. As long as you are doing your thing and being honest about it what else can you do? I don't believe in making music only for others to enjoy.
11-METALICOS-How do you see the future for Katatonia from now on?
DANIEL/ I hope for more tours, gold records, loads of money and recording more records. No, as long as we can do this and have fun doing it I'm happy. Loads of money would be cool though!
12-METALICOS-Allright, thanks again for having answered our questions! It has been a real honour, we wish you the best of luck on all your upcoming activities, be sure that your fans over here will enjoy this interview! Please give us your last comment, cheers!!
DANIEL/ Yeah, thanks! I really hope we can do a tour in Central and South America soon! Cheers! |
