1-METALICOS-¡Hola Haris! ¡Muchas gracias por acceder a esta entrevista para www.metalicos.com en Costa Rica! ¿Cómo estás?

HARIS/ Hola mi amigo Mauricio. Estoy muy bien gracias.  Justo ahora estamos trabajando en algunas nuevas ideas para el próximo disco y suenan grandiosas. 

2-METALICOS-Por lo que he podido confirmar, su último disco, Stygian Forces of Scorn del 2009 (¡tremendo álbum!), fue muy bien recibido por la escena local griega y la internacional.  ¿Cuál fue su idea original para esta obra?  ¿Cuál era la fuerza que lo impulsó?

HARIS/ ¡Gracias por tus palabras! Si, realmente recibimos muy buenas reseñas en Grecia y en el exterior.  Bueno, tienes que saber que cuando estábamos grabando Crowsreign (Album del 2004 N. del E.) Achilleas (guitarrista) y yo estábamos muy jóvenes.  Realmente no teníamos mucha experiencia en composición y grabación, ni tampoco como músicos.  Así que ese fue nuestro primer gran paso dentro de la escena musical, después de haber tocado algunos años con unas bandas locales.  Y también fue nuestro primer intento de trabajar como una banda, Achilleas, Stephan y yo.  Y aunque creo que Crowsreign tiene algunas buenas ideas, pienso que el resultado final no nos satisfizo del todo.  Sabíamos muy poco sobre los procedimientos de grabación y mezcla en ese tiempo.  Y tampoco sabíamos nada sobre la portada.  Cuando vimos la portada, que fue hecha por Seth sin consultar nuestra opinion, ¡nos enojamos tanto que dedidimos hacer todo nosotros solos la próxima vez! ¡Así que pienso que Stygian Forces of Scorn es un progreso natural! Queríamos hacer lo mejor que pudiéramos y explorar nuevos caminos. 

3-METALICOS-¿Tienen algunos planes específicos para este periodo ya que Stygian Forces of Scorn está en la calle?

HARIS/ Desafortunadamente no.  Tenemos muchas propuestas para tocar diferentes shows y tours, en Grecia y en el extranjero (también tuvimos una propuesta para un tour en América del Sur) pero todos tenemos nuestros trabajos y estamos estudiando en la universidad, así que es un poco difícil dejar todo atrás.  Además de eso, tocamos música sólo por diversión y por hobby.  No tocamos música por el dinero.

Pero tal vez tocaremos algunos shows en el futuro. Sólo depende de nosotros.  Sin embargo lo principal que hacemos es tocar y escribir música.  Justo ahora estamos trabajando en muchas ideas para el próximo disco. 

4-METALICOS-Varathron ha estado en la escena black metal underground por un poco más de 20 años; antes de que te unieras a la horda, ¿qué pensabas acerca de la banda? ¿Los admirabas?  ¿Alguna vez soñaste que podrías convertirte en miembro de ellos?

HARIS/ Siempre me encantó la escena black griega y simplemente no pude creer que Stephan (fundador de Varathron N. del E.) era de mi ciudad, y la base de Varathron está en Ioannina (nuestra ciudad natal).  La primera grabación que escuché fue “His Majesty at the Swamp” (Disco debut de Varathron en 1993 N. del E.) ¡y admire la música y los artes tan originales!  Luego algunos años después mi hermano Sotiris, quien también toca en Varathron ahora (guitarras) compró el disco “Lament of Gods” (EP de 1999 N. del E.) y nos encantó.  Yo nunca había visto a Stephan en nuestra ciudad pero mi hermano lo conocía.  Y no, Sotiris y yo nunca creímos que algún día pudiésemos tocar en Varathron.  Por suspuesto ahora es un honor ser miembro de la banda.    

5-METALICOS-¿Cómo describirías la experiencia de ser parte de una verdadera banda de culto en el black metal?  ¿Qué significa para tí?

HARIS/ Deveras puedo escuchar por horas a Stephan, contándome historias de la primera ola de black metal griego (principio de los 90’s).  Todavía veo a Varathron como un fan y cuando escribo música, considero lo que quisiera escuchar de Varathron si no estuviera tocando con ellos.  Realmente es una gran experiencia y tenemos suerte de que mucha gente gusta de la música que hacemos.  Pero también es un gran stress, porque hemos puesto el standard muy alto, especialmente con el álbum Stygian Forces of Scorn, así que debemos trabajar duro para el próximo.

6-METALICOS-Al inicio de los noventas, muchas bandas extremas de calidad se formaron en Grecia, y esto puso a su país en el mapa del metal mundial.  Muchos ojos de todo el mundo han estado poniendo atención a su música desde ese momento.  En tu opinion, ¿cuál es la diferencia principal entre la escena actual griega y aquélla de hace 20 años? Y también ¿Algo de esa época todavía se mantiene?

HARIS/ En mi opinión, las cosas han cambiado para bien.  Grecia siempre ha estado un poco lejos de la escena metal centro europea… eso significa que no tuvimos la oportunidad de ver muchas bandas en concierto, ni de ser influenciados como músicos y compositores, y también era muy difícil conseguir un show para tu banda en el exterior.  Pero las cosas han cambiado.  Las grandes bandas y también las underground visitan Grecia.  Así que pienso que hemos abierto nuestros horizontes musicales, nos hemos familiarizado con la tecnología, y también hemos mejorado como músicos gracias a esto, digamos, globalización.

PERO todas estas cosas tienen también consecuencias negativas.  Puedes encontrar bandas en Grecia tocando nu-metal norteamericano o power metal sueco.  Quiero decir que es difícil encontrar bandas hoy que tengan su propio estilo.

Por lo tanto mi opinión es que las cosas han cambiado de forma positiva, pero el carácter de las bandas se ha perdido.

¡Pero también pienso que hemos logrado mantener nuestro propio estilo musical a través de los años!  Cada grabación es un paso adelante para nosotros, pero siempre en el espíritu de VARATHRON.

Lo principal que se ha mantenido sin cambios es la escena underground que es todavía muy grande y con bandas muy buenas. 

7-METALICOS-Ahora que estamos hablando de los viejos tiempos, si le preguntas al blackmetalero promedio sobre bandas griegas, lo más seguro es que nombrará la trinidad maldita del black metal helénico: Necromantia, Rotting Christ y Varathron.  Sabemos por supuesto que hay muchas otras bandas, pero parece que estas tres atraparon la atención del mundo más que otras.  ¿Qué opinas acerca de esto? ¿Lo consideras una responsabilidad? Ya sabes, representar a Grecia en el mundo del black metal…

HARIS/ Hmmm… supongo que sentimos una responsabilidad con nuestros fans y con nosotros… no sobre representar a Grecia.  Siempre tratamos de hacer lo mejor que podemos, primero que todo por nosotros mismos porque amamos lo que hacemos y después por aquellos quienes gustan de nuestra música 

8-METALICOS-¿Qué crees que es mejor para las grandes bandas underground? ¿Merecen mayor exposición global o es mejor mantener un perfil bajo?

HARIS/ Soy fan del perfil bajo.  Tocamos música sólo para hacer nuestro hobby.  Obtener exposición global y al mismo tiempo mantener un perfil bajo es algo difícil de conseguir… Si alguien quiere escuchar tu música, puede hacerlo en la internet.  Pero no me gustan los rockstars wannabes y la gente que está en busca de fama y dinero.

Mantener el perfil bajo, tocar tu música lo mejor que puedas ¡y no intentar ganar dinero a través de la música!  El reconocimiento no debería ser una razón para tocar música. 

9-METALICOS-¿Cómo ves el futuro de la escena metal griega? ¿Hay bandas nuevas que debamos considerar?

HARIS/ ¡Desde luego! Hay muchas bandas aquí haciendo un trabajo excelente en todos los estilos del metal.  Bandas como Revolting Breed, Bohemian Grove, Utmost Contempt, Drown, Kvazar, Tardive Dyskinesia, No Hand Path ¡son excelentes!  Mantengan los ojos abiertos sobre ellos. 

10-METALICOS-A lo mejor es un poco pronto para una pregunta como esta, considerando que su último disco salió apenas el año pasado.  Pero, ¿puedes decirnos por lo menos, qué les gustaría crear como grupo en un posible próximo álbum?  ¿Cómo lo imaginan?

HARIS/ No, no es demasiado pronto… escribimos música todo el tiempo.  Ya tenemos listas tres canciones y muchísimos riffs en los que estamos trabajando.  Probablemente sera una continuación de “Stygian Forces…”.  Como te mencionaba, hemos establecido un standard muy elevado, así que debemos trabajar duro.  Achilleas, Sotiris y yo escribimos la música y Stephan las letras.  Creo que el nuevo álbum sera más oscuro, con una gran producción y una gran portada, siempre en el espíritu de Varathron.  Así que estén atentos al próximo disco de Varathron…

11-METALICOS-¿Cómo es su contacto con fans de otros países? ¿Reciben comentarios, cumplidos, insultos, etc. de gente en el exterior?

HARIS/ Debo admitir que la mayoría de nuestros fans no son de Grecia y eso es bastante extraño.  La mayoría son de Suramérica.  Han sido muy leales a nosotros durante todos estos años.  Recibimos mensajes todos los días de gente alrededor del mundo y tratamos de contestarles.  Stephan está a cargo de contestar todos estos correos, (desde luego él es el miembro fundador de la banda).   Pero también sé que Stephan, especialmente en los viejos tiempos, recibía bastante correo postal… entonces, aunque no tocamos en vivo usualmente, como para conocer a nuestros fans cara a cara, tratamos de mantenernos en contacto con ellos através del correo. 

12-METALICOS-Hablemos un segundo acerca de tus influencias musicales, ¿a quién admiras (bandas, bateristas tal vez)?  Y también, ¿Te gusta algún otro tipo de música además del metal?

HARIS/ ¡Ahhhhh facil! Me encanta escuchar música.  La escucho todo el tiempo todos los días.  Por lo tanto cuando voy a la casa de Stephan, simplemente me enfermo… ¡tiene una colección enorme!  Lo mejor que he escuchado últimamente es Orphaned Land y me gusta mucho lo último de Behemoth.  Mi banda favorita es por supuesto Iron Maiden y Black Sabbath de la escena metal clásica, y por supuesto Bathory del black metal…  Siempre me encanta dar vueltas en tiendas de música comprando discos.

En lo que respecta a mis bateristas favoritos… empecé a tocar la batería cuando tenía 9 años y vi el video de Life After Death… así que soy un gran fan de Nicko McBrain.  Podrá no ser el mejor baterista pero tiene su propio estilo.  De la escena metal mis bateristas favoriteos son N.Barker, Hellhammer, M. Portnoy, M.Zonder (del poderoso WARLORD). Y en general tengo que mencionar a D.Weckl, V.Colaiuta, S.Gadd, B.Grebb, J.Mayer, R.Morgenstein y muchos más… siempre estoy buscando videos de diferentes bateristas.

En casa solo escucho metal… pero también puedo escuchar un poco de cosas rock/punk/funky/jazz… pero en verdad odio el pop… tiene que morir ya. 

13-METALICOS-¿Tienes algunos consejos para tus colegas bateristas que están interesados en tocar black metal?

HARIS/Hmmmm muchos creen que la batería en el black metal se trata de sólo tocar rápido.  Pero tengo la opinión de que uno debe tener también la técnica para crear música (realmente creo que especialmente con los platillos, los bateristas pueden agregar muchas cosas a la música) en estos tempos tan veloces.  Creo que no soy el típico baterista de black metal, siempre trato de agregar algo más a la música.  Practico todos los días pero no sólo doble bombo o tempos rápidos.  Por supuesto soy un metalero hasta los huesos pero cuando se trata de batería, practico todos los estilos musicales, y luego trato de agregar algunas influencias en la música black.  Hay muchos grandes bateristas en la escena metal pero también los hay fuera de ella, quienes son grandiosos y pueden ser una buena influencia.  Pero como te diste cuenta estoy hablando de influenciar y no de copiar.  Lo principal para todo músico es desarrollar su estilo personal y musicalidad.

Aparte de la batería también toco la guitarra así que puedo escribir mis riffs.  La guitarra me ha ayudado a desarrollar mi musicalidad.  Por lo tanto aconsejo practicar mucho y tratar de desarrollar un estilo y la musicalidad.

Sin embargo, la mejor manera de empezar a tocar black metal ¡¡¡¡¡es con canciones de Darkthrone!!!!! 

14-METALICOS-Perfecto Haris, ¡gracias otra vez por tu tiempo e interés!  Ha sido un gran placer.  Por favor danos un mensaje final para todos los fans de Varathron en Costa Rica y América Latina.  ¡Saludos!

A JOURNEY TO THE DARKEST SWAMP 

In the world of metal, the name “cult band” is not an adjective which is given away freely; and it doesn´t take only a couple classic albums in order to deserve it.  Digging a little deeper, one will find that in the realm of black metal, you also need to be possessor of a recondite aura, almost an arcane one, so you can reach the status of influencer of others.

Deep in the profound caverns of the underground, the black flame adorers will find Varathron, still reigning with majesty at their swamp after almost two decades.

The Greek band managed to be known –and recognized- in every corner of this planet where a blackmetalhead walks.  An today they are more alive than ever.

Cult Black metal is not just any tag.  It´s the lastname that many bands wish to have but it was saved just for a few.  Varathron is among the few.

I had the chance to interview Haris, the drummer of this dark entity, who talked about the current events with the band, the ideas for their next album and many other topics.

Now, please step down to the mythic abyss where the black metal demons are living still.   

1-METALICOS-Hello Haris! This is Mauricio, thanks a lot for agreeing to do this interview for metalicos.com in Costa Rica!  How are you?

HARIS/ Hello my friend Mauricio. I’m fine thank you. We are working currently on some new ideas for the upcoming album and they sound great. 

2-METALICOS-As far as I’ve been able to confirm, your last opus, Stygian Forces of Scorn (damn strong album!), was really well received on both the Greek local scene and abroad.  What was your original idea for this album? What was the force behind it?

HARIS/ Thanks for your words! Yes, it really received very very good reviews in Greece and abroad. Well, you have to know that when we were recording CROWSREIGN, me and Achilleas (Guitars) were very young. We really didn’t have many experiences both in songwriting and recording, and also as musicians. So this was our first big step into the music scene, after playing for some years with some local bands. And also it was our first attempt to work as a band, me, Achilleas and Stephan. Although I believe that Crowsreign has some very good ideas, I think that the final result did not satisfy us at all. We knew little about the recording/mixing procedure at that time. Also, we didn’t know anything about the cover. When we saw the final cover, which was made by Seth without asking our opinion, we were so angry that we decided that the next time we will do everything alone! So I think that STYGIAN FORCES… is a natural progress! We wanted to do the best we could and explore some new paths. 

3-METALICOS-Do you have any specific plans for this time period now that Stygian Forces of Scorn is out?

HARIS/ Unfortunately no.  We have many proposals to play in different shows and tours, in Greece and abroad (also we had a proposal for a tour in South America) but we all have our jobs or are studying in college, so it is a little difficult to leave everything behind. Besides that, we play music only to have fun and do our hobby. We don’t want to play music for money.

But maybe we will play some shows in the future. It only depends to us. But the main thing we always is playing and writing music. Currently we are working on many ideas for the next album. 

4-METALICOS-Varathron has been around the black metal underground scene for a bit more than 20 years now, so, before you joined this horde, what were your thoughts about the band?  Did you admire them?  Ever dreamed that you could become part of it one day?

HARIS/ I always loved the Greek Black metal scene and just couldn’t believe that Stephan was from my hometown and the basis of Varathron is in Ioannina (our hometown). The first record I listened to was ‘HIS MAJESTY…’ and I just admired the music and also the original artwork! Then some years later my brother SOTIRIS, who is also playing in VARATHRON now (guitars) bought the ‘Lament of gods’ cd and we loved it. I had never seen Stephan in our town but my brother knew him. No, me and Sotiris never believed that someday we could play in Varathron. Of course now, it’s our honour to be member of Varathron. 

5-METALICOS-How would you describe the experience of being part of a real cult black metal band?  What it means for you?

HARIS/ I really can listen to Stephan telling me stories about the first wave of the greek black metal (early 90’s) for hours. I still see Varathron as a fan and when writing music, I consider of what I wanted to hear from Varathron if I wasn’t playing in them. Really it’s a great experience and we are lucky that many people like the music we make. But it is also a quiet big stress, because we have set the standards very high, especially with the STYGIAN FORCES…. album, so we have to work hard for the next one. 

6-METALICOS-At the beginning of the nineties, a lot of quality extreme bands formed in Greece, and this put your country on the map of world metal.  And many eyes from all over the globe have been paying attention to your music ever since.  In your opinion, what is the main difference between the current Greek extreme scene, and that of 20 years ago?  And also, does anything of that era still remains untouched?

HARIS/ In my opinion, things have changed in a good way. Greece has always been a little far away from the central Europe metal scene… That means that we didn’t have the opportunity to see many live gigs from bands, so as to get influenced as musicians and composers, and also it was very very difficult to arrange a show for your band abroad. But things have changed. All major bands and underground also, visit Greece. So I think that we all have opened our musical horizons, have become familiar with music technology, and also have improved as musicians due to this, let’s say globalization.

BUT all these things have also negative consequences. You can find bands in Greece playing US Nu-metal or Swedish power metal. I mean that it’s difficult to find bands today with their own music style.

Therefore my opinion is that things have changed in a positive way, but the character of the bands has been lost.

But I think that we have managed to have our own music style through the years! Every record is a step forward for us, but always in the spirit of VARATHRON.

The main thing that has remained untouched is the underground scene that is still very big with very good bands   

7-METALICOS-Now that we’re talking about the old days, if you ask your average blackmetalhead about Greek bands, chances are that they will name the unholy trinity of Hellenic black metal: Necromantia, Rotting Christ and Varathron.  We know of course that there are many other bands, but it seems like these three caught the attention of the world more than any others.  How do you feel about this?  Do you consider this as a responsibility? You know, representing Greece in the world of black metal…

HARIS/ Hmmm…I guess that we feel a responsibility to our fans and to ourselves… not about representing Greece. We always try to make the best we can, first of all for ourselves because we love what we do and then for those who like our music.  

8-METALICOS-What do you think is better for the great underground bands?  Do they deserve further global exposure?  Or is it better to keep a low profile?

HARIS/ I am a fan of low profile. We play music only to do our hobby. To get a global exposure but on the same time keep a low profile is something difficult to achieve… If someone wants to hear your music, he can do that due to the internet. But I don’t like wannabe rockstars and people who are in search of fame and money.

Keep a low profile, play your music as good as you can and don’t try to earn money through music! Recognition should not be a reason for playing music.  

9-METALICOS-How do you see the future for the Greek metal scene?  Should we keep an aye open for any newcomers?

HARIS/ Sure! There are so many bands here, doing an excellent job, in all metal styles. Bands like Revolting Breed, Bohemian Grove, Utmost Contempt, Drown, Kvazar, Tardive Dyskinesia, No Hand Path are excellent bands ! Keep an eye open to them. 

10-METALICOS-It’s probably too early to ask a question like this, considering that your last album came out just last year.  But, can you tell us at least, what would you like to create as a band, on a possible next album?  How do you envision it?

HARIS/ No, it’s not to early… We write music all the time. We already have three songs ready and many many riffs on which we are working on. It will probably be the continue of “Stygian Forces…”. As I mentioned before, we have set the standards very high, so we have to work hard. Me, Achilleas and Sotiris write the music and Stephan the lyrics. I guess that the new album will be darker, with a great sound production and cover, always in the spirit of Varathron. So be aware of the next Varathron album… 

11-METALICOS-How is your contact with fans from other countries?  Do you receive feedback, comments, compliments, insults, etc. from people abroad?

HARIS/ I have to admit that most of our fans are not from Greece and this is quite strange. The most fans are from South America. They have been so loyal to us during all these years. We receive everyday messages from people around the world and we try to answer them. Stephan is in charge of answering to all these mails (of course he is the founding member of the band). But I also know that Stephan, especially in the old days, had a huge amount of post mails… So although we do not play live shows usually, so as to meet our fans face-to-face, we try to keep in touch with them via mails. 

12-METALICOS-Let’s talk for a second about your musical influences, who do you admire (bands, any drummers maybe…)? And also do you like any other kind of music besides metal?

HARIS/ Ahhhhh easy! I’m a huge music fan. I listen to music every time and everyday. Therefore when I get to Stephan’s home I just get sick… he has an enormous collection! The best record I‘ve heard lately is ORPHANED LAND and I liked a lot BEHEMOTH’s new record. My favorite band is of course IRON MAIDEN and BLACK SABBATH from the classic metal scene and of course BATHORY from the black metal scene… It’s always my pleasure to hang around in music shops and buying records.

As for my favorite drummers… I’ve started playing drums when I was 9 and saw the LIFE AFTER DEATH video… so I’m a huge fan of Nicko McBrain. He may not be the best drummer but has his own style. From the metal scene my favorite drummers are N.Barker, Hellhammer, M. Portnoy, M.Zonder (from the mighty WARLORD). And generally I have to say D.Weckl, V.Colaiuta, S.Gadd, B.Grebb, J.Mayer, R.Morgenstein and many many more… I ‘m always searching for drum videos of different drummers.

Well at home I only listen to metal music… Also I can listen to some rock/punk/funky/jazz stuff… but I really hate pop… it has to die now. 

13-METALICOS-Do you have any words of advice to your fellow drummers who are interested in playing black metal?

HARIS/Hmmmm many believe that black metal drumming is about playing only fast. But I have the opinion that someone has to have also the technique to create music (I really believe that especially with the cymbals, drummers can add many things in music) in these really fast tempos. I think that I’m not the typical black metal drummer, I always try to add something more to the music. I practice everyday but not only double-bass or fast tempo beats. Of course I’m a metalhead to the bone but when it comes to drums I practice all musical styles, and then try to add some influences into the black metal music. There are many great drummers in the metal scene but there are also many outside of it, who are great and who can be a great influence. But as you noticed I’m talking about influence and not copy. The MAIN thing for every musician is to develop his personal style and musicality. Besides drums I also play guitar so that I can write my riffs. Guitar has helped me to develop my musicality. Therefore I advice to practice a lot and trying to develop style/musicality.

But the best way to start playing black metal is by playing DARKTHRONE songs!!!!!!!!!!!

HARIS/We really appreciate your interest and loyalty to VARATHRON and we know that we have a big fanbase there. When we had the proposal to make a tour in Latin America we were so excited. It’s our dream to play there for our fans and drink some beers together… maybe this will happen someday. Be aware of our next album, it will be dark mysterious and of course painted black. HAIL TO YOU ALL AND HORNS UP!
