-EL ATAQUE DE LA MAQUINA DANESA DE THRASH METAL

Artillery es un nombre legendario en la escena thrash mundial, y a pesar de sólo haber sacado cinco discos en casi tres décadas, nadie tiene un solo argumento para refutar su legado.  La banda ha pasado por momentos difíciles, algunos de los cuales nos hicieron pensar que ya habían dado todo lo que tenían.  Pero en pleno 2010 Artillery despliega un arsenal implacable, respaldado con un brutal disco de thrash metal que complació tanto a los fans antiguos como a los nuevos que se han unido al culto.

Hace pocos días, Michael Stützer guitarrista de la banda contestó las preguntas que metalicos.com le formuló.  La conversación tocó numerosos temas como la grabación de su próximo disco y la experiencia de presentarse frente a una generación de fans completamente nueva. ¡Disfruten el ataque!

1-METALICOS-¡Hola Michael, saludos desde Costa Rica!  Muchas gracias por tomarte el tiempo de responder algunas preguntas para tu audiendia en América Latina.  ¿Cómo están estos días?

Michael/ Estamos bastante bien ahora, andamos tocando muchos shows, etc.

2-METALICOS-¿Puedes contarnos acerca de las actividades recientes de la banda? ¿Qué han estado haciendo?

Michael/ Acabamos de regresar de dos grandes festivales en Alemania, el "Walpurgis Metal Days” y el "Rock Hard Festival" lo cual fue muy bueno para Artillery.También hemos comenzado a escribir nuevas canciones para nuestro próximo disco, el cual será grabado desde finales de Noviembre hasta mediados de Diciembre, y saldrá al mercado en Abril o Mayo a través de Metal Mind Productions.

3-METALICOS-Ha pasado casi un año desde la salida de “When Death Comes”.  Después de todo este tiempo, ¿cómo evalúan la recepción del álbum por parte de los fans y la crítica?

Michael/ La recepción del disco ha sido extraordinaria por parte de los fans y los medios.  Estamos muy agradecidos con la manera en que la gente ha tomado “When Death Comes”.Cuando tocamos las canciones nuevas en vivo, la gente se mete en ellas tanto o más que con canciones viejas como "Terror Squad" y "Khomaniac". 

4-METALICOS-“When Death Comes” me impresionó por varias razones.  Te menciono sólo un par: el crudo sonido de las guitarras (realmente grueso y terriblemente pesado), y los dementes riffs tan memorables.  Esto por supuesto, te hace pensar que hay suficiente creatividad todavía en la banda.  Entonces, cuando componían el álbum, ¿cómo decidieron cuáles riffs tenían que usar y cuáles no?  ¿Les resultó difícil escoger el material para el disco?

Michael/ Gracias, Artillery siempre ha trabajado duro para crear riffs y canciones originales, así que sólo utlizamos los riffs con los que estamos totalmente satisfechos.Creo que los fans pueden escuchar de verdad si te gusta tocar y tratar de ser creativo, ¡y pienso que eso es justamente el por qué “When Death Comes” ha sido tan bien recibido!

En lo que respecta al gran sonido de las guitarras, eso tiene que ver con nuestros viejos amplificadores Marshall y el productor Søren Andersen. 

5-METALICOS-A través de los años he encontrado en internet sitios incontables (incluyendo webzines, tiendas electrónicas, foros, etc.) con listas de los “más grandes discos” en cada género.  ¿Están ustedes enterados de que “By Inheritance” está considerado por muchos fans en todo el mundo como uno de los 5 o 10 mejores discos de thrash metal en toda la historia?  ¿Cuáles son sus impresiones al respecto?

Michael/ Estamos desde luego muy honrados con eso, he leído muchas cosas grandiosas acerca de ese disco.  Y es muy bueno ver que muchos fans consideran que el álbum nuevo está más en la línea de By Inheritance que en la de B.A.C.K, el cual era más de un proyecto que de una banda.

6-METALICOS-Artillery ha sacado solamente cinco discos en los últimos 28 años.  Considerablemente menos que otras bandas y aún así son denominados como uno de los mejores actos thrash metal ahí afuera.  Considerando el increíble número de bandas en el mundo del metal (viejas y nuevas), ¿en tu opinión, cuál es la razón del por qué Artillery es todavía seguido por los fans y los críticos?

Michael/ Realmente espero que sea porque la gente deveras gusta de Artillery, ya que tenemos algunos de los fans más dedicados que hay. Y tal vez el no haber sacado tantos álbumes, nos ha dado una especie de estatus de culto.

7-METALICOS-Después de la salida de B.A.C.K en 1999, la banda se deshizo y mucha gente pensó que una reunión sería improbable.  Sin embargo, ¡aquí están vivos y coleando!  ¿Qué tan fuerte es la banda ahora en términos de estabilidad?  ¿Y qué han aprendido de errores pasados?

Michael/ La banda nunca ha estado tan fuerte y estable como ahora, principalmente porque tenemos un cantante que ama tocar en vivo y está totalmente con los pies en el suelo y es también un buen amigo.Todos en la banda no sólo tocamos juntos, sino que compartimos tiempo fuera de la música, así que nos divertimos mucho juntos.

8-METALICOS-Estoy seguro de que deben haber ganado algunos nuevos y jóvenes fans con el último disco, y muchos de ellos tal vez ni siquiera habían nacido cuando ustedes ya eran una banda reconocida.  ¿Cómo se sienten al haber encontrado un sitio entre los metaleros jóvenes?

Michael/ Esa es una de las mejores cosas, que todavía podemos complacer a muchos de los fans antiguos pero también está esta nueva y enorme generación de fans nuevos con mente abierta a quienes de verdad les gusta la banda.Es gracioso ver a veces cuando tocamos en vivo, a los fans jóvenes pensando “¿Hey, no están ustedes muy viejos?”, pero después de un rato ellos comienzan a hacer headbaging.

También hemos tocado con muchas de las bandas nuevas de thrash, quienes realmente se saben todas nuestras canciones y eso es grandioso de escuchar.

9-METALICOS-¿Cómo les ha ido con andar de tour hasta ahora?  ¿Qué lugares han visitado promoviendo “When Death Comes”?

Michael/ Desde que nos reunimos hemos tocado en países como Polonia, Alemania, Bélgica, Italia, España, Suecia, Noruega, Finlandia, Hungría, Eslovenia, Serbia, Grecia, Suiza, Turquía y por supuesto Dinamarca.Hemos tocado más de 40 conciertos y todavía recibimos ofertas así que las cosas se ven bastante bien.

10-METALICOS-¿Cómo es su relación con los fans latinoamericanos?  ¿Reciben correos y retroalimentación desde esta parte del mundo?

Michael/ Tenemos algunos fans muy dedicados especialmente en Honduras, Mexico y Costa Rica, ¡y esperamos poder tocar allá alguna vez!

11-METALICOS-¿Tienen alguna meta en particular que no alcanzaron en los viejos tiempos y les gustaría completer ahora?

Michael/ Si, todavía tenemos muchos retos que completar, como tocar en Japón, Estados Unidos y América Latina. ¡Nos encanta tocar en lugares donde no hemos estado antes! ¡Y también hacer llegar nuestra música a más gente en general!

-THE DANISH THRASH METAL MACHINE ATTACK

Artillery is a legendary name in the worldwide thrash metal scene, and despite having released only five albums in nearly three decades, no one has a single reason to deny their legacy.  The band has gone through rough times; some of which made us think that all they had to give, was already given.  But right now in 2010, they are displaying an implacable arsenal, backed by a hell of an album that pleased the old fans, and also managed to attract new young ones to the cult.

A few days ago, Michael Stützer guitarist of the band, answered the questions that metalicos.com asked him.  The conversation touched numerous subjects such as the recording of their upcoming album and the experience of playing in front of a completely new generation of fans.

1-METALICOS-Hello Michael, greetings from Costa Rica! Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer some questions for your Latin American audience!  How are you these days?

Michael/ We are doing great at the moment; we are playing a lot of shows etc. 

2-METALICOS-Can you tell us about the recent activities of the band?  What have you been doing lately?

Michael/ We are just coming back from 2 great German festivals "Walpurgis metal days” and the "Rock hard festival" which was very good for Artillery. We are also starting to write new songs for our next album, which will be recorded in late November ‘till mid December and will be released in April / May through Metal Mind Productions.

3-METALICOS-It’s been almost a year since the release of “When Death Comes”.  After all this time, how do you evaluate the overall reception of the album by both fans and media?

Michael/ The reception of the album has been just overwhelming both from the fans and the media. We are very grateful by the way people have taken "When death comes" to them. When we play the new songs live people are just as much into them like the old songs "Terror Squad" and "Khomaniac"

4-METALICOS-“When Death Comes” impressed me for several reasons.  Let me just mention a couple: the raw sound of the guitars (really thick and terribly heavy), and the insanely memorable riffs.  This album is simply a truckload of riffs.  This of course makes you think that there’s plenty of creativity still in the band.  So, when composing the album, how did you decide which riffs had to be used and which had to be discarded?  Was it hard to choose the material for the album?

Michael/ Thanks, Artillery has always been working hard to make the riffs and songs original, and we only using the riffs we are totally satisfied with. I think the fans can hear if you really love to play and still try to be creative, I really think that’s why “When Death Comes” had been received so well!According to the great guitar sound it has a lot to do with our old Marshall amps and the producer Søren Andersen.

5-METALICOS-Throughout the years I have found on the internet countless sites (including webzines, e-shops, fan forums, etc.) with lists of “greatest albums” for every genre.  Are you aware that “By Inheritance” is considered by many fans around the world as one of the best 5 or 10 thrash metal albums ever?  What are your impressions about this?

Michael/ We are of course very honored about that, I have read a lot of great things about that album. And it’s great to see that many fans consider the new album to be more in the vein of By Inheritance than B.A.C.K, which was more a project rather than a band. 

6-METALICOS-Artillery has released only five studio albums in the last 28 years.  Considerably less than many other bands yet it is still considered as one of the best thrash metal acts out there.  Considering the incredible number of bands in the metal world (both old and new), what in your opinion is the reason why Artillery is still followed by both fans and media?

Michael/ I really hope that it’s because people really like Artillery ‘cause we have some of the best and more dedicated metal fans out there. And maybe because we haven’t released so many albums, it has given us a kind of cult status.

7-METALICOS-After the release of the B.A.C.K. album in 1999, the band broke up again and for many people a new reunion was unlikely.  However, here you are alive and kicking!  How strong is the band now in terms of stability?  And what have you learned from past mistakes?

Michael/ The band has never been so strong and stable as now, mainly because we have a singer who loves to play live and is totally down to earth and also is a good friend.We all in the band not only play music together but also spent time outside the music, so we have a lot of fun together.

8-METALICOS-I’m sure that you must have gained tons on new young fans with your latest album, and most of them maybe were not even born when you were already a recognized band.  How do you feel about having found a spot among young metalheads?

Michael/ That’s one of the best things, that we still can please many of the old fans but also there is a whole new generation of open minded young and new fans who really liked the band. It’s funny to see sometimes when we play live many of the young fans are thinking “hey man aren´t you too old?”, but after a while they just start to bang their heads out. We have also been playing with a lot of newcomer thrash outfits, who really knew all of our songs and that’s so great to hear. 

9-METALICOS-How has touring been so far?  What places have you visited this time around promoting “When Death Comes”?

Michael/ Since we reunited we have been playing in countries like Poland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Greece, Switzerland, Turkey and of course Denmark. We have played over 40 concerts and we still got offers so it looks really great.

10-METALICOS-How is your relationship with the Latin American fans?  Do you receive mails and feedback from this part of the world?

Michael/ We have some very dedicated fans from especially Honduras, Mexico and Costa Rica and we hope to play there some time!

11-METALICOS-Do you have any goals that were not reached during the old days that you would like to achieve now?

Michael/ Yeah, we still have a lot of goals to reach, like playing in Japan, United States and Latin America.We love to play places where we haven’t been before! And also get our music out to more people in general!

12-METALICOS-What are your plans for the future in terms of new albums and additional touring?  Do you like to think about this or do you prefer to let things go their own way?

Michael/ We will start making the new album in late November in Medley studio again and with producer Søren Andersen. “When Death Comes” has just been released in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay so we are working to tour South America (and hopefully Costa Rica??). But we always take things very easy and try to have as much fun out of it as possible!
