Entrevista Nornagest de Enthroned

Después de más de 15 años en la escena del black metal underground, lo horda belga Enthroned carga el status de banda de culto como un negro sudario. Han martirizado todo lo sagrado con siete discos de estudio, dos EPs y un álbum en vivo grabado en Brasil. No se puede ignorar a bandas como Enthroned, dueñas de renombre y sobre todo de comprobado calibre musical, cuando dan muestra de seguir más vivas que nunca, en pleno siglo XXI, y sobre todo cuando son tan pocos los actos que sobrevivieron a la época más gloriosa del black metal. Luego de su paso por Napalm Records, la banda se encuentra ahora bajo la égida del sello Regain Records, casa de otros grandes de la

escena como Marduk y Ragnarok, y se disponen a liberar en Marzo próximo, suúltima plaga denominada “Pentagrammaton”, la cual promete ser uno de los asaltos más inmisericordes del año en el reino del metal negro.

Con todo esto en mente, en metalicos.com nos dimos a la tarea de contactar a Nornagest, líder, vocalista y guitarrista de la banda. A continuación encontrarán la entrevista que este seguidor de lo oculto accedió a responder para nosotros. Disfruten de este pequeño manifiesto apocalíptico.

1-METALICOS-¡Hola Nornagest! Primero que todo deseo agradecerte por acceder a hacer esta entrevista para tus seguidores en América Latina. Empecemos preguntándote, ¿cómo se siente la banda ahora que se acerca la fecha de salida de su próximo disco, Pentagrammaton?

NORNAGEST/ ¡Ave! Estamos contentos con lo que alcanzamos en “Pentagrammaton”, este es claramente el álbum más fuerte de Enthroned en varios puntos. Yo sé que la mayoría de bandas dicen lo mismo sobre su disco más reciente pero en este caso, no hay forma de equivocarse dentro de nuestra percepción sobre el mismo, la gente que ya ha escuchado el disco y que no tienen relación con la banda ha expresado el mismo sentimiento: “Pentagrammaton” es definitivamente una de las mejores o simplemente la mejor grabación de Enthroned hasta la fecha.

Curiosamente, no estoy tan sobre animado ni nada, sólo estoy contento y 666% satisfecho con lo que el álbum alcanza, sin duda, esto es acerca del orgullo de mi carrera, nunca antes he estado tan satisfecho respecto a ninguno de nuestros discos, lo cual es una buena señal si puedo decirlo...

2-METALICOS-¿Cómo les fue con el proceso de composición y grabación? ¿Fue difícil o fácil completar este álbum?

NORNAGEST/ Bueno… nos tomó dos años tener las composiciones completas, sobre todo por el caos con la agenda de los miembros, etc. ... así que los miembros en ese momento se dieron cuenta que no podían darle a Enthroned el tiempo que merece, por lo que decidieron partir, lo cual es la razón para el regreso de Neraath y la adición de Garghuf en la batería. Desde el momento en que Enthroned estuvo completamente operativo, el álbum vino por sí mismo a nosotros, literalmente hablando, el proceso de composición sucedió muy naturalmente ¡y los tracks fluyeron como sangre en nuestras venas!

3-METALICOS-El grupo en completo aparece como los productores de todos sus discos desde Armoured Bestial Hell en el 2000; ¿produjeron Pentagrammaton también? ¿Cuál creen que es la diferencia entre tener a un “forastero” produciendo un álbum, y ustedes como encargados de esa tarea?

NORNAGEST/ Bueno, la verdad “Pentagrammaton” ¡es el primer disco que hacemos nosotros completamente! “Armoured Bestial Hell” todavía contó con un ingeniero de afuera. Aquí nos hicimos cargo de la producción, la mezcla, ingeniería, diseño, artes, presentación y los conciertos promocionales que siguen a la salida del disco. Es muy, muy gratificante hacer todo por ti mismo, duro e intenso pero por lo menos obtuvimos el resultado perfectamente, las atmósferas que queríamos y el álbum acabó más allá de nuestras expectativas. Pensamos que como teníamos la experiencia, y ahora nuestro propio estudio de grabación y los conocimientos en artes y diseño, sólo teníamos que hacer el resto nosotros también, ¡y el resultado está ahí!

4-METALICOS-Acaban de terminar una estadía de tres discos con Napalm Records, y ahora están con Regain. ¿Cómo se sienten sobre el cambio? ¿Esperan mejores cosas en el futuro?

NORNAGEST/ Napalm nos dio un gran contrato de promoción, nos dieron mucho apoyo, pero era hora de un cambio y honestamente recibimos una mejor oferta de Regain. Hasta ahora, estamos muy satisfechos con Regain, pero ellos todavía tienen bastante que hacer por Enthroned ¡y estoy bastante seguro que harán lo mejor!

Desde luego, las cosas se pondrán mejores de lo que ya están incluso antes de la salida de “Pentagrammaton” así que esperemos para ver, ¡pero el futuro se ve muy bien para Enthroned!

Phorgath

5-METALICOS-Tienen a Neraath Daemon de vuelta en la banda después de una ausencia de cinco años, ¿cómo se dieron las cosas esta vez para que él regresara?

NORNAGEST/ Cuando Nguaroth salió, solo había un nombre en nuestra mente, Neraath había expresado su voluntad de regresar a las tiendas de Enthroned por varios años, él incluso fue nuestro guitarrista de sesión en vivo cuando Nguaroth no podía tocar debido a su agenda tan apretada. Así que por supuesto se lo propusimos y él estuvo contento de volver como un miembro a tiempo completo. Hace cinco años, él tuvo que dejar la banda a causa de sus estudios y trabajo, pero ahora que estamos juntos en nuestro propio estudio, ¡el problema se ha solucionado!

6-METALICOS-El baterista Garghuf (quien fuera también miembro de Gorgoroth N.d.E.), es la adición más reciente a la alineación de Enthroned. ¿Puedes contarnos cómo le está yendo con el resto del grupo? ¿Qué tan difícil le resultó adaptarse a la estructura de Enthroned?

NORNAGEST/ A Garghuf le está yendo muy bien; él ya era un fan del grupo y cuando le propusimos que lo intentara, ¡estuvo totalmente conectado! Después de haberlo intentado con varios bateristas, estuvo claro que él era el hombre para el trabajo, así que le propusimos formar parte como miembro a tiempo completo y él aceptó de inmediato. No se llevó mucho tiempo para que se adaptara a nuestro proceso de trabajo, fue de hecho increíble; él simplemente se acomodó con mucha rapidez ¡y ahora es como si hubiese estado con nosotros desde siempre!

7-METALICOS-¿Ayudó al proceso en general, el tener a tres de cuatro miembros que ya conocían los hábitos de la banda, a la hora de crear Pentagrammaton?

NORNAGEST/ Absolutamente, Neraath es el único guitarrista aparte de mí que escribió bastante música cuando estuvo antes en Enthroned, así que volver a tocar con él fue como si nunca se hubiera ido, ¡la magia estaba ahí desde el primer día! Y como ya dije antes; Garghuf es alguien que se adaptó MUY rápido a la banda por lo que fue la adición más fácil que jamás hemos tenido.

8-METALICOS-¿Qué puedes decirnos sobre el contenido del nuevo álbum? ¿Qué ha conseguido Enthroned con Pentagrammaton? Desde luego, sabemos que podemos esperar puro e intenso black metal, pero no hay nada como las palabras de un creador cuando habla de su creación...

NORNAGEST/ Le parecerá extraño a algunos lectores pero si tengo que decir qué ha conseguido Enthroned con “Pentagrammaton”, es un perfecto trabajo de traducción. Enthroned no es sólo música, y yo sé que algunas personas por ahí no pueden entender eso, pero Enthroned es una parte del ocultismo y la espiritualidad para nosotros, un vector para nuestra filosofía, un poco como un libro mágico de John Dee o cualquier otro ocultista.

Con “Pentagrammaton”, las letras fueron escritas primero, y nosotros solo tradujimos las emociones, el centro de cada letra, en música. A eso me refiero con un perfecto trabajo de traducción. El álbum es muy intenso y lleno de variaciones. Tienes tracks agresivos, acelerados (incluyendo la canción más veloz jamás escrita por Enthroned, ¡¡¡300 blasts por minuto en la batería!!!) y también algunos medios tiempos pero siempre intensos. La atmósfera en general es más oscura y sucia, hay un aura especial en este lanzamiento. Lo mejor es que chequeen ustedes mismos, ¡pero supongo que verán a qué me refiero!

9-METALICOS-¿Tienen planes de regresar a América Latina para hacer algún tour pronto?

NORNAGEST/ Estamos negociando algunas fechas en Latinoamérica para el otoño del 2010. Sería fabuloso volver a sus costas ¡pues Latinoamérica es definitivamente la mejor audiencia que hay! Pero como ya dije; estamos sólo en el proceso de negociar, así que esperemos para ver...

10-METALICOS-Hablemos un poco sobre la escena black actual. En otra entrevista leí que habías comprado el FAS-ITE, MALEDICTI, IN IGNEM AETERNUM de la banda francesa Deathspell Omega. Tomo esto como ejemplo porque hoy en día, las opiniones son realmente radicales al comentar sobre aquellos grupos que no siguen los patrones “sagrados” de las bandas nórdicas antiguas. Entonces, ¿cuáles son tus ideas sobre el black metal moderno? ¿Existe algo como “progreso” o “evolución”; es bueno o malo para el género dejar los viejos parámetros atrás?

NORNAGEST/ Viejo, moderno, black metal tradicional, es todo para mí solo Black Metal; la única diferencia que hago, consiste en bandas tocando BLACK metal y bandas tocando Black METAL. Siempre que el sentimiento y la honestidad estén ahí, me vale una mierda. Mi interés principal es lo que hacemos con Enthroned, y la verdad los demás pueden hacer lo que quieran hacer, están ahí sólo para mi propio entretenimiento de cierta forma. Desde luego, apoyo y me gustan muchas bandas de black metal, pero sólo aquellas las cuales sé que llevan la esencia verdadera y no los pendejos de mierda que siguen modas y no saben por qué se ponen pintura (viéndose más como payasos pandas que otra cosa para mí) ni de lo que están hablando en sus... “letras”.

11-METALICOS-¿Sigues de cerca la carrera de otras bandas, o te quedas con los viejos maestros? ¿Qué prefieres escuchar como artista?

NORNAGEST/ Como te decía antes, no me interesa si son nuevos o viejos; me gustan o no. Me gusta tanto el viejo Venom como el último Funeral Mist por ejemplo. Hay varias bandas nuevas que de hecho sigo y me gustan tal como he hecho siempre, por ejemplo descubrí recientemente a Septic Moon de México, no conozco a los tipos, pero mi primera impresión fue muy buena y su álbum “Silent Breath of Evil” ¡es simplemente brillante!

12-METALICOS-¿Y qué tal la escena black belga? ¿Crees que deberíamos poner más atención a algunas bandas –¡aparte de Enthroned por supuesto!–?

NORNAGEST/ La escena metal en Bélgica es bastante buena en mi opinión, en black metal puedo citar a Goat Torment, Emptiness, Gorath, Pek, Aguynguerran, Paragon Impure, Dawn of Crucifixion y Dark Ages para nombrar unos pocos. ¡Esas son en mi opinión las mejores bandas de black metal en Bélgica!. Además, tienes bandas en otros géneros como Gae Bolga (la mejor banda de thrash belga para mí) Hunter, Amen Ra (Culto!!!!), Twilight Icon, E. Invoked, The Reckoning, Panchrysia, Psalm…

13-METALICOS-Bien Nornagest, gracias de nuevo por esta oportunidad, de verdad te deseamos lo mejor con el grupo ¡y el disco que pronto sale! Por favor déjanos unas últimas palabras.

After more than 15 years in the underground black metal scene, the Belgian horde Enthroned, carries the status of cult band like a black shroud. They have brought affliction upon all things sacred with seven studio albums, two EPs and a live recording captured in Brazil. You can’t ignore bands like Enthroned, owners of great prestige and especially well proven musical caliber, when they show you that they’re more alive than ever in plain 21st century, and above all, when so very few cult bands have managed to survive with their might untouched.

After their stay with Napalm Records, the band is now with Regain, home of other big names on the scene like Marduk and Ragnarok, and they’re about to unleash in March, their latest plague entitled “Pentagrammaton”, which promises to be one fo the most unmercyful assaults of the year in the realm of black metal.

With all this in mind, we at metalicos.com contacted Nornagest; leader, vocalist and guitarist of the band. You will find below the interview which this occult lover agreed to do with us. Enjoy this little apocalyptic manifesto.

1-METALICOS-Hello there Nornagest! First of all I want to thank you for agreeing to do this interview for your Latin American audience. Let’s start by asking you how the band feels now that the release date for your new album Pentagrammaton approaches?

NORNAGEST/ Ave! We are glad of what we achieved with “Pentagrammaton”, this is clearly the strongest Enthroned album to date on several points. I know most bands are saying that regarding their newest release but in this case there’s no misleading within our perception of it, the people who heard the album already and who are not related to the band expressed the same feeling: “Pentagrammaton” is definitely one of the best or simply the best Enthroned record to date.

Curiously, I am not that over excited or whatever, I am just glad and 666% satisfied with the achievement of the album, without doubt, this is, my pride regarding my career, I haven’t been so satisfied before regarding any of our releases, which is a good sign if I may say so…

2 METALICOS-How did the composing/recording process go? Was it difficult or easy to pull this one off?

NORNAGEST/ Well… it took us two years to manage to get the compositions done, due mainly to the chaos regarding the agenda of the members etc… so the members back then realized that they couldn’t give Enthroned the time it deserve, so they decided to part ways, which is the reason of the return of Neraath and the addition of Garghuf on drums. From the moment that Enthroned was fully operable, the album came from itself to us, literally speaking, the composition process went just naturally and the tracks were just flowing like blood in our veins!

3-METALICOS-The complete band appears as the producers of all the albums since Armoured Bestial Hell in 2000; are you producing Pentagrammaton as well? What do you think is the difference from having an “outsider” producing an album, and yourselves taking care of those duties?

NORNAGEST/ Well, actually “Pentagrammaton” is the first album that is completely done by ourselves! “Armoured Bestial Hell” was still engineered by an outsider. Here we took care of the production, mix, engineering, design, artwork, layout and promotional gigs that are following the release. It’s very, very gratifying to do everything yourself, hard, intense but at least we got perfectly the result, atmospheres that we wanted and the album ends up even beyond our expectations. We thought that as we have the experience, now the recording studio of our own and skills in artwork/ design, that we just had to do the rest ourselves as well, and the result is there!

4-METALICOS-You just ended a three record stay with Napalm Records, and you are with Regain now. How do you feel about the change? Do you expect better things to come?

NORNAGEST/ Napalm gave us a big deal of promotion, they gave us great support, but it was time for a change and honestly we got a better offer from Regain. Until now, we are very satisfied with Regain, but they still have a lot to do for Enthroned and I’m pretty sure they will do their best!

For sure, things will get better as they already are even before the official release of “Pentagrammaton” so let’s wait and see, but the future looks pretty nice for Enthroned!

5-METALICOS-You have Neraath Daemon back in the band after a five year absence, how did things work this time around in order for him to return?

NORNAGEST/ When Nguaroth left, there was only one guy in our mind, Neraath expressed his will to return in the Enthroned camp for several years, he even was our session live guitar player when Nguaroth couldn’t make it due to his busy schedules. So of course we proposed him and he was glad to come back as a full time member. Five years ago, he had to leave the band due to his heavy studies and job, now that we are working together in our own studio, the problem was solved!

6-METALICOS-Drummer Garghuf (who was also a member of Gorgoroth) is the newest addition to Enthroned. Can you tell us how is he doing with the rest of the band? How difficult was for him to adapt into the Enthroned structure?

NORNAGEST/ Garghuf is doing great; he was already a fan of the band before and when we proposed him to try out he was over the moon! After we tried out several drummers, it was clear that he was the man for the job, so we proposed him to become a full time member and he accepted right away. It didn’t take long before he got in our working process at all, it actually was amazing; he just adapted very fast and nowadays it’s like he’s been with us forever!

7-METALICOS-Did it help to the overall process to have three out of four members who already knew the ways of the band, when creating Pentagrammaton?

NORNAGEST/ Absolutely, Neraath is the only guitar player besides myself who wrote a lot of music when he was back then in Enthroned, so playing back with him was just like he never left, the magic was there from day one! As I said above; Garghuf is someone who adapted himself VERY fast to the band so it was the easiest addition we ever had.

8-METALICOS-What can you tell us about the content of the new album? What has Enthroned achieved with Pentagrammaton? We of course know that pure intense black metal can be expected, but there’s nothing like the words of the creator when talking about his creation…

NORNAGEST/ It will seem odd to some readers but if I have to say what Enthroned achieved with “Pentagrammaton”, it’s a perfect work of translation. Enthroned is not only music, I know some people over there cannot understand that, but Enthroned is a part of occultism and spirituality to us, a vector for our philosophy, a bit like a grimoire of John Dee or any other occultist.

With “Pentagrammaton”, the lyrics were written first, and we just translated the emotions, topic of each lyric into music. That’s what I mean by a perfect work of translation. The album is pretty intense and filled with varieties. You have aggressive tracks, fast ones (including the fastest song ever written by Enthroned 300 bpm on drums!!!) and also some more mid tempo but still intense. The overall atmosphere is darker and filthier, there’s a special aura within this release. The best is to check by yourselves, but I guess you’ll see what I mean!

9-METALICOS-Do you have plans to return to Latin America for some touring any time soon?

NORNAGEST/ We are dealing for some dates in Latin and South America for the fall of 2010. It would be awesome to return to your shores as Latin and South America is definitely the best Audience around! But as I said; we are only within the dealing process, so let’s wait and see…

10-METALICOS-Let’s talk a little about the current black metal scene. In another interview I read that you had bought FAS-ITE, MALEDICTI, IN IGNEM AETERNUM from the French band Deathspell Omega. I take this one as an example because now a days, opinions are really radical when commenting about those bands which don’t follow the “sacred” patterns set by the Nordic bands of old. So, what are your ideas on modern black metal? Is there such a thing like “progress” or “evolution”; is it good or bad for the genre to leave the old parameters behind?

NORNAGEST/ Old, modern, traditional BM is to me just Black Metal; the only difference I make is bands playing BLACK metal and black METAL. As long as the feeling, honesty is there I do not give a shit. My main business is what we do with Enthroned actually the rest can do whatever they want they are just there for my own entertainment in a way. Of course, I support and like plenty of BM bands, but only the ones I know who carry the real essence and not the fuck asses trendies who do not know why they put paint (looking more like panda clowns than anything to me) or what they are talking about in their…”lyrics”.

11-METALICOS-Do you follow closely the career of any new bands? Or do you stick to the old masters? What do you prefer to listen to as an artist?

NORNAGEST/ As I said previously, I don’t care if they are old or new; I like it or I don’t. I like as much the old Venom than the last Funeral Mist for example. There are some newer bands that I actually follow and like just like I always did until now like for example I discovered recently Septic Moon from Mexico, I don’t know the guys, but my first impression is very good and I think their “Silent Breath of Evil” album is fucking brilliant!

12-METALICOS-What about the Belgian black metal scene? Do you think that we should pay closer attention to any bands –besides Enthroned of course!–?

NORNAGEST/ The Belgian Metal scene is very good in my opinion, in Black Metal I can list Goat Torment, Emptiness, Gorath, Pek, Aguynguerran, Paragon Impure, Dawn of Crucifixion and Dark Ages to name a few. Those are in my opinion the best BM bands from Belgium! Else, you have bands in other genre like Gae Bolga (the best Belgian Thrash metal band in my opinion), Hunter, Amen Ra (Worship!!!!), Twilight Icon, E. Invoked, The Reckoning, Panchrysia, Psalm…
