From time to time, we see a band’s shade in the horizon, which –for unknown reasons–, calls strongly for our attention. If we decide to take some minutes and explore the nature of this attraction, sometimes can be surprised... and then we think that the album of the year, the best new band, or simply, our next favorite metal outfit, has been found.
Silent Call is an ensamble formed in Sweden, floating over the waters of proggressive metal, with melodic yet aggressive ornaments, spectacular choirs and the like. If this description was enough, many would say that it’s not worth listening to them, just because of the one thousand bands that can hang the same description label around their necks.
But here’s where the leap of faith is needed. Taking those minutes and closing your eyes in order to listen carefully to the band’s music, and then waiting for that possible click which could trigger something inside our head, and say: “This band is amazing!” and remain hooked from there on.
This young band has only two albums out there, one of them entitled “Greed”, released this year. And upon listening to it, we at metalicos.com stood impressed. Without losing time we ran to contact Patrik, the band’s keyboardist, and this interview is the key that ended up introducing us into their world. Give this band an opportunity, as it may become your pick of the year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1-METALICOS-Hello there! This is Mauricio from www.metalicos.com in Costa Rica, how are you these days?
Patrik/ Hi there and thank You for your interest in us. We’re just fine and we had a release party for “Greed” on Saturday the 22nd of May, a showcase for our new album. It was great!
2-METALICOS-Silent Call has released two full length albums so far, and its beginning to carve a name in the international scene, however, can you please introduce the band, style, influences, etc. to our readers in Latin America?
Patrik/ Silent Call’s journey began when me and Daniel back in 2004 decided to start writing some songs after we had been playing together in the same band, Satins ´n´ Lace (later renamed to Jamback), for a long time.
When we decided to end Jamback it felt natural for us to continue to work and write music together since we share the same passion for metal and melodies, so after we had written some songs we started to search for some musicians and found Micke, the drummer. Micke then knew Tobbe and gave him a call, showed him what we got and he liked what he heard.
The search for a singer ended right after that, Micke knew Andi since their time together in the band Elsesphere, gave him a call, he showed up on a Sunday and blew as all away with his stunning voice.
Silent Call was formed. We recorded a demo, “Divided”, and six months later we signed a record deal with the English label Escape Music.
The first record “Creations From a Chosen Path” was more or less old material Daniel and I had re-written to get a more modern touch to it, some new songs were written as well but in general all songs were written by me and Daniel.
On “Greed” on the other hand we have all been working more together, everyone has been more involved in songwriting which you can hear in the result.
We are all influenced by different bands, Daniel and I come from the melodic school, influenced by bands like Whitesnake and Europe, Andi and Micke took the progressive part into Silent Call influenced by bands like Dream Theater and Symphony X, to mention some.
Tobbe is just about raw power, a heavy duty bassplayer who brings influences from for example Iron Maiden. All in a mix and you got the unique sound of Silent Call.
3-METALICOS-I’m telling you.. we decided to contact the band because of the great impression that we got from your recently released album “Greed”. Can you talk to us about it? Where did you find inspiration? Did it turn out as you envisioned it?
Patrik/ Well, first of all we inspire each other, it’s a huge inspiration source and second, we got the opportunity to release a second album, if that doesn’t inspire then what does?Things that happen in real life inspire you, listening to your favourite bands inspires and also evolves yourself as a song writer.
The album itself turned out better than expected and the reason is that we had an extremely tight schedule, we had to record everything within a month and Martin over at JM studios in Gothenburg only had a week for mixing and mastering. So, overall it turned out very well, sure we all have things we think could have been even better but that’s the past - here we are now with a new album and songs that definitely turned out as we envisioned them.
4-METALICOS-We have found several good reviews of Greed online, how do you feel about having put together an album that caused such a good response?
Patrik/ It’s always a terrifying moment when you receive the first reviews, will it float or sink?, but we have so far received great reviews which of course feels fantastic, such a great feeling, we are more than grateful for all the reviews and kind words. It can sometimes feel a bit unrealistic, to follow a song or songs from just being an idea to being released around the globe and reviewed by someone 1000 miles away. You always have to have respect for the attention you get, I mean, the person whether he or she likes it or not have taken the time to actually listen to what you have written. Never forget that.
5-METALICOS-How did your first album “Creations From A Chosen Path” work for you, in terms of opening doors and gaining exposure?
Patrik/ It definitely put Silent Call on the map, we got some airplay on radio stations around the globe, people wrote about us on forums here and there. We got some promotion, were interviewed by magazines and radio so we got some valuable exposure but I don’t think it opened up any real doors for us, more like we became a band to look out for.
6-METALICOS-Despite being a very young band, you have managed to develop a strong sound in a very short time; what’s the formula or general idea behind your sound?
Patrik/ Well first of all, we are all quite experienced musicians and have been writing and playing music for a long time. When me and Daniel started this we kind of knew from the beginning what we wanted to achieve, how we wanted it to sound and when the other guys came along we developed the sound further in a direction that was exactly where we want to be, at least for now but most important is that we are writing what we feel.
We don’t follow any guidelines, templates or have a formula or secret recipe, what you hear comes from our heart and souls, if it fits and sounds good then we go for it! Of course sometimes we try a lot of different ideas and angles before we feel that “this is the idea” or we are satisfied enough to proceed. Believe in what you do!
7-METALICOS-How often do you write material? All the time or only when recording time approaches?
Patrik/ We are always writing new material, it’s a constant process and not something we do at a specific time, it’s more spontaneous. It can be that me or Daniel come up with an idea during a rehearsal or something written at home that we develop further together in our studio or during a rehearsal. We try to record every idea, if we remember them.
8-METALICOS-Can you tell us about the fans and media reaction to your work in general? How its been so far?
Patrik/ It’s a really fantastic feeling when a person tells you how great he or she thinks you are, how much a specific song moved them or that they can relate to words you have written. It makes you proud and grateful! This is very, very important for us, it’s the fans that make it possible for us to continue to do this.
The same goes for all the attention from the media, we appreciate every line written about us and all the airplay we get, overall there have been good reactions from the media.
9-METALICOS-Greed has a wonderful production which of course contributes to enhance the overall positive effect. How long did you work in the studio recording and polishing the album?
Patrik/ As I mentioned earlier, we didn’t get as much time as we wanted but luckily since we’re always writing songs we had almost all songs written when it was time to start the recordings. It was hectic though, our own recording process was done in about 1 month, thank God for computers since we were able to do the recording in different studios simultaneously which shortened that time. A BIG thanks goes out to Martin Kronlund at JM Studios, he only had one week for mixing and mastering and he did a hell of a job!
10-METALICOS-What are your plans in order to support “Greed”? Will you tour in 2010?
Patrik/ We’re fighting tooth and nail to get out there and play live, we really love to be on stage and it’s what we do best. We keep getting asked that same question every time and every time it saddens me to say no, there are no plans at the moment. Basically, we’ll play for anyone that will have us! It is really hard, though, as currently we are doing all of our own bookings and are not represented by a booking agency. That makes it hard to cross any real borders, and stand out from the other forty thousand metal bands. If anyone is interested in booking or representing us, You know where to find us!
11-METALICOS-What are the goals of the band now that a higher degree of exposure has been reached?
Patrik/ First of all we need to find a booking agency, a management or both to help and support us in this matter. The goal is of course to take advantage of the exposure we get and use that to become a touring band, for example, to be a more established band, we want the whole package but we can’t unfortunately do this on our own.
12-METALICOS-It’s probably a bit too soon to ask this, but for curiosity sake: When would you like to release your next album? Do you pretend to keep your style untouched or would you like to expand through new elements?
Patrik/ Yeah, it’s way too soon, nothing planned at all or discussed but personally I would like to have a new Silent Call album out on the market within 2 years which I think is realistic.
Regarding our style, we can’t change it too much I think, we have our unique Silent Call sound, melodic and progressive and will continue with that but it will probably be a bit more progressive if I take a wild guess, you never know. It’s very important that we continue to evolve our songwriting as well as evolving as musicians. As I said, we write what we feel! For better or worse.
13-METALICOS-Alright my friend, it’s been a real honor to have this opportunity. I’m sure a lot of Latin American readers will look for your music after reading these words! Please give us your final message, cheers!!
Patrik/ Thank You! It’s been a pleasure and for You readers in Latin America, thank you for reading this interview and hopefully listening to our songs, you mean a lot to us, it’s you listeners and fans out there that matter - never forget that! Take care,
Patrik,
Silent Call
