These is a interview from the Jordanian Metal Band Bilocate, the interview was made to Rami Haikal - rhythm guitar & Hani Al-Abadi - bass
1. First of all thanks to yours for taking some time to answer the following questions. I think it would be a good start if you could introduce your band briefly to those who might not know you yet.
Rami Haikal:
Hello Douglas, hope all is well, first let me give my sensere apologies for being late, as we have been busy handling alot of things for Bilocate, and sure I’ll be more than happy to answer your questions.
Bilocate is a Dark Oriental Metal band from Fuhais – Jordan, the band was founded in 2003 by Ramzi, Waseem and Hani, joined by Baha in the same year, then later in 2004 I have joined the band. After we had released our first album Dysphoria in 2005, Ahmad joined us as Bilocate drummer.
Bilocate has released two albums and one EP, the latest was Sudden Death Syndrome in mid 2008.
2. What does the band name mean?
Rami Haikal:
The word “Bilocate” is a derivative from the word “Bilocation”, which means: “to be in two different places at the same time”.
3. Which bands or musicians and styles have you been influenced by through the years (and currently)?
Rami Haikal:
Every member in Bilocate has his own unique influences, which -when combined- result in the unique sound of Bilocate, yet we have a lot of common influences such as OPETH, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Emperor and many others.
4. I listen your self-released awesome second album titled “Sudden Death Syndrome”, is a great combination of technical progressive Doom/Death/Dark Metal with a couple of ethnics influences and also have a excellent production, please tell us more about this album; What does the title of the album mean for you guys? What is the main-concept or theme?, How long was the work for this release? “Sudden Death Syndrome”contains an exceptional good sound. Where have you recorded this album and can you tell a bit more about the recording-process of “Sudden Death Syndrome” And finally your hopes in the album?
Rami Haikal:
As a lot of people know, we live in a region that is swarmed with wars, vicious and cruel wars, wars where innocent people could just die suddenly just because they live there, this is where Sudden Death Syndrome meaning fits, a sudden death caused by War, which is the syndrome. The main concept goes around the feelings that people go through while living in war, and the tragedies that happen as a result of these wars.
Sudden Death Syndrome went through a lot of ups-and-downs until it finally went out in this way, we had problems finding the best way to record the instruments while there are no professional studios and equipments in Jordan, but after a lot of research and hard work, we have managed to get the best quality of what we have. Actually the whole album was recorded 2 times before the final recording took place.
All the instruments were recorded in Jordan and the Vocals were recorded in Dubai. The astonishing sound of Bilocate was polished and refined by Jens Bogren who was the engineer that mixed and mastered our album,
also known for his work with bands such as OPETH, Symphony X and many others.
We hope that Sudden Death Syndrome and the message in it will reach every metal fan in the whole world, and to put Jordan in the global metal map.
5. How were the critics and the promo/distribution for Sudden Death Syndrome”so far?
Rami Haikal:
Sudden Death Syndrome has received a lot of rave reviews from the top metal magazines and e-zines around the globe, which resulted in signing several distribution deals in the USA and across Europe. For people who want to buy our album, they can check our MySpace page for the nearest distributors/sellers.
6. How does Bilocate compose its music? I mean, your music is from time to time rather difficult so I presume the composing process takes a rather long time? And do you guys work individually on the songs or are all songs created as group?
Rami Haikal:
Actually that’s true, Bilocate’s music starts by setting the atmosphere for the songs based on the written lyrics and the concept behind them, so as you have figured, we start by finding the concept that we want to talk about, then the lyrics are written, afterwards we start having group composing sessions and build up our songs, that’s where the power of Bilocate comes, combining and coordinating the ideas of 6 people and producing well structured and composed materials.
7. Some bands can take many years to get a record deal or be part of a major tour while others get lucky and it happens right away. How quick was your ascension? Is there anything you would do differently or is it all part of the learning process?
Hani Al- Abbadi:
Nowadays being part of a major label is like winning a lottery, music industry is very cruel, the market is already filled with thousands of new comers, not to mention the main factor “profit”, and that’s what labels are looking for, pure business.
Now in Bilocate we come from a business background and we handle this side very seriously almost like any label would do if not more, yet all of it is part of a learning process, this is how all businesses evolve, you learn from your mistakes, you acquire contacts here and there and steer your strategy accordingly.
It's a very competitive market; bands have to improvise, become a label, a booking agency, all that apart from being a musician.
8. An obligatory question: Exists there in Jordania a good scene for metal music and also in neighboring countries?
Rami Haikal:
Actually Jordan had a very good metal scene 10 years ago when a lot of great bands existed, but after some troubles with authorities the metal scene has been shut down for so long. Nowadays there is a good and growing metal scene but it is kept underground and unappreciated, no concerts and live shows of any sort are permitted.
9. Where you see the global Metal-scene in the present?
Rami Haikal:
A lot of talented and great bands are emerging from the Middle East area and from Asia, bands fusing metal with the culture they live in, I think people will dig these areas since they are always looking for something new, so I hope one day we’ll have our own Wacken-like festival in the middle of Jordan :).
10. What is there to expect in the near future to Bilocate?
Rami Haikal:
Now we are working on promoting our album by preparing for a Euro tour which will hopefully take place this year. As for releasing new materials, we will re-record our first album Dysphoria and compose a new album which will be expected in the middle of 2010.
11. Thanks for your time! I wish you all the best for the “Sudden Death Syndrome”, You have the last words for Metalicos readers.
Rami Haikal:
I want to thank you for this great interview and I want to urge the readers to always search and dig the music where it is least expected, it is where you’ll always find great unexpected results.
