Born from the ashes of Sentenced, the Finnish band Poisonblack has already walked a long way since their great debut “Escapextacy” in 2003.
Now, in 2010 and with their fourth full length which has just been released, we can say that Poisonblack has carved its own name in the international scene. Their sound has evolved from a dark gothic vibe in the beginning, to a more hard rock-influenced and groove oriented metal today. This might have made them lost followers, but also has gained them lots of new fans for sure. This is how identity is built.
A few days ago we decided to contact the band in order to arrange an interview, and their drummer Tarmo Kanerva, took the time to talk to us about their latest album “Of Rust and Bones”, and everything surrounding the band at the moment. Enjoy!
Special thanks go to Nasrin Vahdani (Century Media Promotion & Marketing) for the assistance in arranging this interview.
1-METALICOS-Hello there Tarmo! How are you? This is Mauricio from www.metalicos.com in Costa Rica, thanks for taking the time! How is the new album “Of Rust and Bones” doing so far?
Tarmo/ Hi! I’m just fine, thanks! I think the response has been just great so far! I don’t know any exact sales figures yet, but the reviews have been positive in general and the feedback from our fans has also been mainly positive.
2-METALICOS-I believe this album is in general less straight forward than your previous efforts, and that it privileges a more refined songwriting. I mean, this album has a lot more textures than the others. Was this the result of a previous idea, or the final sound just “happened”?
Tarmo/ I guess it’s just natural development. We didn’t intentionally try to write more complicate songs or anything like that. We quite simply decided to write music that feels good to us and hope that someone else likes it, too!
3-METALICOS-I’ll be honest with you, at first listen I didn’t like the album, but I decided to give it a couple more spins and that was it. It has not stopped growing on me. As you may know, these in general are considered to be the best albums. Was your intention to demand a little effort from the listener this time around? Isn’t “risky” for a band like Poisonblack to step into a more varied territory musically speaking?
Tarmo/ As I mentioned before, we didn´t do it intentionally, it just happened. I think you have a point there, this album does require more listening than our previous albums. In my opinion it’s kind of sad that many people don’t want to hear anything challenging nowadays. If you think many classic rock or metal albums, they all have one thing in common: they need a little time and effort before you get into them. Of course it’s a little risky for a band like us to do this kind of album, but then again we want to be able to stand behind all our releases and not just release some sort of “fastfood” music, if you know what I mean?
4-METALICOS-I’m telling you, the drumming on some songs really surprised me, the bluesy and jazzy influences are up front here and there, and this makes Poisonblack sound like never before. Damn, I’m even tempted to say that if The Doors were still releasing albums, they would sound like “Down the Drain” with slightly less distorted guitars! How did you reach the point in which you said: “This is the drum sound that best fits in the songs?
Tarmo/ First of all, thank you for your kind words! If I manage to surprise someone in a positive way with my playing, I always take it as a compliment. We felt a little unsure of “Down The Drain” in the beginning when we started to rehearse new songs for this album. We had a little conversation about it and decided to record it and then decide if we are going to include it on the album or not. Both I and our producer Hiili Hiilesmaa agreed that this certain 70´s style drum sound would do justice for this song and that’s how it got started. I’m really happy with the result and many people have pointed “Down The Drain” out from the album. Not just because of the drum sound, but they have felt that this song really stands out from the album in a positive way.
5-METALICOS-How about touring in 2010? Do you foresee a busy year?
Tarmo/ Well, we have already played several club shows here in Finland and just got home from a four show mini-tour in Germany. In the end of May we will visit Japan for the first and we all are really excited about it! During the summer we will play some festival shows and we will also do more club shows in Finland next fall.
6-METALICOS-How do you evaluate the Poisonblack impact as a band now that you’ve been in the scene since 2003?
Tarmo/ Well, it’s hard to say. During these years we have moved musically from our gothic debut towards more rocking and grooving sound. I know there’s some people who don’t like what we’ve done after our debut album, but then again I think we have managed to reach many new fans who probably wouldn’t like the stuff we did in the beginning. Like I said, it’s really hard to tell.
7-METALICOS-All in all, Poisonblack is still a young band (despite the extensive experience of its members), so I’m sure that you must have a list of pending achievements. Could you tell us where would you like to see the band in the future?
Tarmo/ Playing head-lining shows in huge stadiums, of course! Seriously, we don’t worry about the future so much. Quite simply, we just play music that pleases us and hope that people are going to like it, too. As long as we are developing musically and have a chance to play in different countries we are satisfied. Naturally it would be cool if we made a lot money and so on, but things like that just happen if they are going to happen. All you can do is to put 100% into your music and see where it leads you.
8-METALICOS-All right, here comes the question you have been asked 100 times before, but I have to do it for the Latin American fans (this intie will also appear in Spanish). What are your influences as a drummer? Who do you admire?
Tarmo/ Well, I’m a huge fan of 70´s hard rock in general and therefore drummers like John Bonham and Ian Paice have been great idols for me. Also Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain and Cozy Powell were drummers who have influenced me a lot. Damn, this is a difficult question! There’s so many great drummers that it’s almost impossible to pick up just a few!
9-METALICOS-What kind of fan feedback do you receive from places other than Europe and the US? Do you think Poisonblack will be able to tour other places besides the ones I just mentioned?
Tarmo/ I certainly hope so! We will play one show in Japan in the end of May and hopefully it will open some doors for us in Asia. We have also received lots of fanpost from Latin America and for me personally it has always been a place where I would love to go. Hopefully we have a chance for it in the near future!
10-METALICOS-What other bands do you listen to regularly? Any favourites at the moment?
Tarmo/ Like I said before, I listen quite a lot of old school 70´s hard rock. Right now I’ve been listening to Megadeth’s “Endgame”. In my opinion it’s a killer album! Also Wolfmother’s “Cosmic Egg” has an excellent retro vibe on there!
11-METALICOS-Are you interested on other activities besides music, something else that you like to do?
Tarmo/ Nowadays I’ve been quite heavily into sports. I try to take care of my physical condition as much as possible. I also read quite a lot. When we are not touring or writing music I usually do quite normal stuff. Go out and have a beer with friends and so on.
12-METALICOS-How strong your fanbase is in Finland? Where else do you have a massive following?
Tarmo/ I guess things look quite good in Finland. “Of Rust And Bones” reached #6 chart position on official Finnish charts and it is very easy for us to get gigs here in Finland. I only wish that things were so good in other countries as well! Germany has always been good ground for us and we also have lots of fans in Southern European countries like Italy and Spain, for example.
13-METALICOS-OK Tarmo, I guess this will do for now, thanks a lot for taking the time and giving some words to your Latin American followers! Please leave any final thought that you would like to share with us, good luck and cheers from Costa Rica!
Tarmo/ Thank YOU! It would be really, really cool to come over there and play some shows for you people! Hopefully we can do it someday soon! Keep it heavy until then! |
